~ The Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission operates over 11,000 acres of property, including regional parks, beach parks, a historic plantation site, landmark fishing piers, waterparks, boat landings, a climbing wall, a challenge course, an interpretive center, an equestrian center, cottages, a campground, a marina, and event facilities. We also offer a variety of recreational services – festivals, camps, classes, programs, and more. ~

The Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission will improve the quality of life in Charleston County by offering a diverse system of park facilities, programs, and services.

Position Overview

The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking a Recreation Nature Interpretive Aide.

Under the direction of the Natural History Interpretation Coordinator, the Natural History Interpretation Aide will design and conduct a variety of natural history programs throughout the park system. Examples include birding programs, Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs, planetarium programs and more.

Responsibilities

  • This Interpretation Aide will travel to and from a variety of parks and parklands to research, design, and conduct natural history programs according to NAI (National Association for Interpretation) standards.
  • Other duties include maintaining inventories for program supplies, updating species lists, and reporting program data.
  • The individual in this position will be expected to converse effectively and efficiently with a wide variety of people and maintain professional certifications with NAI.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A general knowledge of the local environment and natural and cultural resources of South Carolina.
  • Advanced knowledge/experience with SC birds and birding is preferred.
  • Ability to verbally communicate well with others.
  • Ability to read and interpret body language of others.
  • Ability to follow instructions in an organized manner and complete assigned tasks to the satisfaction of the direct supervisor.
  • Ability to present clear, concise, and comprehensive written and oral reports.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, establish and reflect good work habits, and the ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Ability to accomplish tasks that require physical labor.
  • Ability to present oneself as a professional in the field of interpretation and conform to the CCPRC uniform requirements.
  • General computer skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Interpretive Guide and Master Naturalist.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne pathogen procedures.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • A high school diploma is required and college course work or a college degree is preferred.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: early childhood education, ornithology, biology, marine biology, interpretation, environmental education or similar field.
