The Parks and Cemeteries Division of Community Services provides maintenance and stewardship for parks, cemeteries, streetscapes, trails, open areas and other public grounds for the Fort Collins community.

The Forestry Division provides maintenance and stewardship for the City trees, and provides education and training to enhance citizens' knowledge on the urban forest.

With the demand for quality recreation areas by the residents, the Parks Division has become known as a leader in maintenance, administration, and innovation as recognized by the National Park and Recreation Association's Gold Medal Award for Excellence.

Position Overview

Parks Division is currently seeking Parks Grounds Workers I to join a highly motivated, talented team of innovators to help strengthen the future world-class stewardship of parks in our community.   The position offers a positive and engaging environment, training, and professional growth opportunities in the green industry.  The Parks Grounds Worker I Position is a seasonal position which begins as early as March and ends as late as November, but there is potential for advancement and career progression for the self-motivated employee.

Responsibilities

  •  Assist in maintenance of City parks, trails, facilities, recreational areas and downtown public spaces.
  • Learn to operate a variety of equipment including, utility vehicles, hand tools, power tools.
  • Clean and remove trash from all areas of the park including shelters and restroom facilities.
  • Assist with horticulture maintenance (shrub beds, flower beds, specialty gardens).
  • Assist with irrigation maintenance and repairs.
  • Apply chemical/herbicides with required training.
  • May help with snow removal.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  •  Unrestricted Valid driver’s license.
  •  Must be at least 18 years old.
  •  Ability to pass a drug screening test.
  •  Physical, mental and cognitive abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties outlined above.
  • These include:
    • Ability to read, write and communicate well with others.
    • Physical ability and stamina to perform duties including bending, lifting, digging, pushing and kneeling.
    • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly; up to 50 pounds maximum.  
    • Proper safety measures for lifting/moving any item are expected to be followed; including, but not limited to, the use of proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), use of lifting/moving equipment, and/or assistance from co-workers.

Working Conditions:

  •  Schedules may vary from part-time to full-time and may include over-time, weekends, and holidays.
  • Working under the supervision of a crew leader, the employee will work outdoors in a variety of conditions.
  • Will wear proper safety gear including, but not limited to, safety-toed boots, safety glasses and ear protection as required.
  • Will attend weekly staff meetings and safety meetings as scheduled.
