~ In its almost 30 years, Center for International Environmental Law  (CIEL) has built a reputation as one of the leading watchdogs of development finance institutions and plays a vital role in defending the environment and communities against the adverse impacts of development by ensuring that the laws and policies governing development activities are consistent with those protecting the environment and human rights. ~

The PLR program monitors financial flows; empowers communities to advocate for their rights; strengthens international legal tools; and strives to increase corporate accountability.

Position Overview

CIEL seeks a Senior Campaigner to join its Environmental Health team to support a growing campaign to address the human and environmental impacts of plastic production, use, and disposal worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Specifically, the Senior Campaigner will advance CIEL’s efforts to strengthen the international legal regime governing plastics, including securing a mandate within the United Nations to negotiate a new global agreement to address the plastic crisis.
  • The Senior Campaigner will participate actively in key international fora, engage directly with relevant decision-makers, and work to equip, strengthen, and align partners worldwide to define, develop, and achieve policy objectives within the United Nations, the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) conventions, and beyond.
  • Responsibilities include: participating actively in relevant international processes; preparing policy analyses, briefing notes, and other documents; mobilizing cross-cutting partnerships and building coalitions; working with movement partners to develop and advance shared campaign objectives, strategies, and tactics; and working with CIEL’s Communications team and others to create communications and campaign materials that help achieve CIEL’s objectives.

Qualifications

  • The Senior Campaigner will have a deep familiarity with the sources and impacts of plastic pollution, demonstrated experience in environmental and policy advocacy at the international level, extensive and established connections within the global movement to address plastic pollution, and experience creating and mobilizing campaigns at multiple levels in the fight against plastic.
  • The position requires highly effective writing and public speaking skills; extensive experience working in collaborative processes with people from diverse backgrounds; and fluency in English. T
  • he position demands extensive international travel, often for significant periods. The Senior Campaigner reports to the Program Director for Environmental Health.
