~ Pacific Environment seeks to protect the communities and wildlife of the Pacific Rim by strengthening local leadership and championing social justice in Alaska and the Arctic, China, California, Vietnam, and elsewhere on the Pacific Rim. ~

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Executive Director and working in a team setting with Pacific Environment leaders and those from allied organizations, the Arctic Director provides strategic direction, leadership on Arctic issues and campaigns, and staff and campaign management. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following subjects and geographies:

  • Creative campaign planning and implementation; coordination and leadership of effective coalitions; grassroots organizing
  • Collaborating with and support of Alaska Native and other Indigenous peoples
  • Marine policy; Arctic policy and governance; Arctic climate, energy, and shipping issues
  • Experience at the International Maritime Organization or Arctic Council
  • State and federal decision-making in Alaska
  • Foundation and major donor fundraising

Additionally:

  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated achievement, leadership, and campaign skills relevant to one or more of the thematic focus areas listed above.
  • There is significant opportunity for the Arctic Director to expand Pacific Environment’s range of activities in these focal areas to make a significant impact on the future of our planet.

Location, Travel and Hours of Work: 

  • Ideally in Anchorage but we will consider strongly qualified candidates based in San Francisco.
  • The position will require frequent international and domestic travel.

Qualifications

  • B.A./B.S. degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degrees are a strong plus.
  • Significant, demonstrated experience and achievement in strategic advocacy, policy, and campaign work; in program leadership and implementation; and in managing staff.
  • Demonstrated success as an effective team player and collaborator with allied stakeholders.
  • Experience in one or more of the policy areas or geographies listed above, especially involving matters involving the Arctic, Alaska, and/or Indigenous peoples.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated success in foundation fundraising. Experience in individual fundraising a plus.
  • Personal commitment to helping communities have a strong voice in decision-making.
