Position Overview

AlexRenew, a premier water resource recovery enterprise, is seeking an experienced Leader in Environmental Policy and Performance to lead the development and management of overall organizational regulatory compliance and cross functional environmental programs and projects.

You will: serve as a one stop shop to advise our non-environmental teams on environmental considerations; provide leadership, management for environmental programs to include pretreatment, sustainability, laboratory, regulatory and operational performance to deliver results under time pressures and with complex deliverables, including audit and quality processes; present project plans for approval by executive team and manage cross functional teams to deliver against stated goals; follow national and international trends in water resource recovery and share opportunities for organizational leadership in implanting utility of the future ideals.

A keen understanding of environmental regulations, pollution prevention, environmental management systems, environmental policy development and implementation and watershed management is important to this role.

The role requires a driven individual with a passion for environmental protection and a demonstrated collaborative spirit who wants to promote innovation, creativity and promote collaborative business solutions. Additional requirements include strong analytical and critical thinking skills, superb communication and interpersonal skills, poise when confronted with sudden setbacks, ability to make decisions with 80% information, thirst for knowledge and the ability to learn quickly, creative and analytical problem solver, and consistent track record of project management and engineering.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of AlexRenew’s environmental performance within your department and the organization.
  • Establish, monitor and audit AlexRenew’s environmental management systems to continually improve process, compliance, financial and sustainable efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure that AlexRenew operations are in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Lead the cross functional development and implementation of environmental policies and practices, including VEEP, EMS and ISO standards organization wide.
  • Collaborate extensively with Human Resources, Safety, Finance, Communications, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and other AlexRenew teams.
  • Educate AlexRenew team members on environmental programs and policies.
  • Manage the AlexRenew Pretreatment program in accordance with requirements of the VPDES permit and state and federal regulations. Participates in development of control strategies and policies for sewer discharge and other water quality issues. Coordinate and collaborate with appropriate City and/or County staff in such development and implementation.
  • Lead the laboratory management and functions at AlexRenew.
  • Oversee, manage and audit AlexRenew data and recordkeeping for all regulatory compliance requirements, including wastewater, storm water, air, recycle, wastes, ISO, EMS and other requirements.
  • Provide policy guidance and practices to Executive Staff on regulatory compliance.
  • Follow new digital, technology and employee trends and provide recommendations to the Executive Team for implementation of new ideas in support of Utility of the Future and Utility Worker of the Future ideals.
  • Keep up to data with environmental regulation and legislation issues.
  • Liaise with relevant bodies such as local authorities, public bodies and relevant national associations.
  • Audit, analyze and report environmental performance to internal and external stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
  • Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of an organization, of the impact of emerging environmental issues.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environment, science, sustainability, business, management or other related field required; Advanced degree preferred.
  • Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible environmental and compliance experience preferred.
  • Self-starter with innovation, integrity and attention to details.
  • Excellent understanding of sustainability and environmental topics and fundamentals (such as: sustainable design, planning policy, waste, carbon/energy, responsible sourcing, water, land use change, and certification systems).
  • Experience with data visualization and data analysis.
  • Experience working in and building cross-functional teams, resolving issues, building consensus and working towards agreements during the entire project lifecycle and after the initial project phases are complete - ability to build and maintain strong and positive relationship across the organization.
  • Experience interacting with interdisciplinary project teams and international partners.
  • Able to communicate effectively, and to rapidly synthesize and communicate findings to senior leaders.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information in a concise way to a non-technical audience, and vice versa.
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple projects with competing priorities and different timescales (i.e.: checkpoints with long-term goals while completing shorter term goals).
  • Demonstrated passion for environmental and sustainability practices, especially recycling and conservation of finite resources.
  • Exceptional program or project management experience required.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts both orally and in writing with both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent verbal, telephone and written communication skills.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • A detailed Physical Demands Analysis is available in Human Resources and a copy will be provided to all incumbents in this position.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee strength demands are typical of office work, and include lifting up to 10 pounds, and minimal pushing or pulling.

Work Environment:

  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • Environmental conditions necessitate following strict safety guidelines and use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the work is performed primarily indoors, primarily in a climate controlled office environment, however outdoor trips are necessary to conduct field inspections.
