~ Phillips Wharf Environmental Center located on Tilghman Island, MD is a non-profit organization created to provide a hands-on educational experience with the animals and plants that inhabit the Chesapeake Bay region. ~

In addition to learning about the environment, visitors also learn how the Chesapeake Bay watermen harvest the Bay's resources. Phillips Wharf also has a growing aquaculture operation based on providing sustainable seafood for the community.

Position Overview

Phillips Wharf offers a number of internship opportunities for both college students and recent college graduates interested in studying marine and environmental sciences.

Internship will be 4 days per week, unpaid, housing provided. Recent college graduates with an interest in environmental education is especially desirable. Current college students may also apply, if they are taking the semester off or looking for a summer internship. It is essential that applicants be comfortable teaching and interacting with children due to the many field trips we host. On-property housing is provided in a shared staff house; rent, utilities, furnishings, and wifi included free-of-charge.

Responsibilities

  • Write and carry out lesson plans for students of all ages.
  • Teach lessons to PreK-12 students visiting Phillips Wharf on field trips and travel with the Fishmobile on visits to schools and festivals throughout Maryland.
  • Welcome visitors to the center and give them in-depth tours of our facility, teaching them about modern issues relevant to the Chesapeake Bay region.
  • Assist with general grounds labor such as cleaning indoor facilities, site prep for special events, and occasionally assisting with our oyster aquaculture operation.

Qualifications

  • Recent college graduate with a degree in education, biology, marine science, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs. Must be comfortable working on small skiff boat for long periods of time, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and getting wet and dirty continuously throughout the day.
  • Must be able to work closely with animals (large fish ,crabs, turtles) and small children.
  • Kayak certification is preferred.
  • Must have good public speaking skills.
  • Strongly recommended that applicants have a car. The area is very remote, there is no public transport, and the closest grocery store is 14 miles away.
