Description
~ Fox Run Environmental Education Center is a 501c3 nonprofit in Falmouth, Ky. We provide environmental education opportunities in alternative energy, organic gardening and wildlife conservation. ~
We are a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility and take in 75 – 100 mammals and reptiles per year.
Fox Run Environmental Education Center is located on a 16 acre farm in a rural area. We are off grid and seek to live a sustainable lifestyle. Much of the food we eat is grown on the farm.
Position Overview
We offer internships in Wildlife Rehabilitation and Organic Agriculture or a combination of the two. All internship have an environmental education component.
Internships are unpaid. We do provide room and board for interns who live over an hour from Falmouth, Ky. Interns work @ 20 hours per week. Times and days will vary according to our schedule. Two-week minimum commitment required. We will gladly work with your college/professor to provide an appropriate curriculum for you to earn credits.
Responsibilities
Wildlife Intern tasks include:
- Feeding non-RVS babies such as opossum, squirrels, and To work with RVS species the intern must have had the pre-exposure vaccination series
- Proof of recent Tetanus shot required
- Cleaning tasks such as cleaning enclosures, cages, washing dishes, mopping floors etc
- Assist with building enclosures
- Answering the phone and completing intake paperwork
- Assisting with classes and programs
- Assisting with medical procedures
- Performing enrichment activities for animals
- Physical Requirements – Able to lift 50 pounds, outside in all types of weather, standing for long periods of time, walk on uneven terrain
- Willing to follow safety procedures
- Education – college student or recent graduate, preferably in a biological, veterinary or environmental education degree
- Must be at least 18 years old
Organic Agriculture tasks include:
- Daily garden tasks such as watering, hoeing, weeding, planting, seeding, cultivating
- Assisting with building raised beds
- Planning and designing garden spaces
- Assisting with classes and programs
- Physical Requirements – Able to lift 50 pounds, outside in all types of weather, standing for long periods of time, walk on uneven terrain
- Willing to follow safety procedures
- Assisting with care of farm livestock
- Marketing garden produce
- Assisting with “business” side of organic gardening
- Interns may have their own garden plots on a 50/50 split
