~ Paul Smith’s College is a small, private baccalaureate and associate degree granting institution located on a 170 acre campus adjacent to Lower St. Regis Lake in the 6 million acre Adirondack Park of northern New York State. ~

In addition, the College owns 14,000 acres of adjacent lands composed of forest and lakes. The College is committed to providing all students with an outstanding undergraduate experience through engaged teaching, experiential learning, and personal attention. 

Five departments, including the Forestry Department, prepare nearly 800 full-time students for innovative careers. Academic programs within the Forestry Department provide an extensive “hands-on” laboratory and field experience. The Forestry Department oversees a variety of educational and service sites including International Paper-John Dillon Park, a wilderness area specifically designed for persons with disabilities, a commercial sugarbush, and numerous forest research demonstration sites

Position Overview

The Forestry Department at Paul Smith’s College invites applicants for a full-time faculty appointment, starting in the fall of 2019 to help support our growing forestry program. This position (Assistant/Associate Professor of Forestry) has a primary focus teaching concepts of forest health, dendrology, forest products, and forest policy. The position is a full-time/nine month. Other expectations may include research or outreach that addresses regional forestry issues and involves student participation, and advising student clubs associated with the academic program. Initial rank will depend on qualifications.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate for this positions will have training and practical, real-world experience in forestry, a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level where faculty provide personal guidance to undergraduate students, the capacity to teach a variety of courses, demonstrable research/outreach interests in forestry, and demonstrated record of professional involvement with his/her community.
  • Therefore, candidates for these positions must have (1) a Master’s degree, (2) documentation of effectively providing personalized, experiential teaching at the undergraduate level, and (3) a record of productive research/outreach and professional development.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Candidates with a Ph.D. in forestry will be given higher consideration.
  • Paul Smith’s College particularly seeks candidates who have experience teaching at a small college and have successfully delivered introductory and advanced courses in forestry that meet the needs of students with a range of academic abilities both in the major and in other majors such as fish & wildlife or general natural resource management.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in facilitating career success of students through developmental advising and involvement in student chapters of professional societies.
