This position (Renewable Integration Strategy & Compliance Director) will manage analytical reporting and project management support related to interconnection data management and regulatory compliance. 

Responsibilities

  • This level performs quantitative and qualitative analysis that serves as a basis for the company’s view of the technical and economic potential of various forms of renewable energy in each of our regulated jurisdictions. 
  • Solicits input from key internal stakeholders and gathers market intelligence from external sources in the development of these forecasts, including interfacing with project developers, component manufacturers, national renewable laboratories, universities and other research institutions. 
  • In addition, this individual will support reporting activities and compliance-related filings for distributed energy resources. 
  • The incumbent is expected to possess skills, and the ability to work independently, lead cross functional teams and participate on cross functional teams.
  • Candidates for this position will possess excellent business acumen, market insight, strong quantitative and communication skills and be proactive. 
  • This position will possess the ability to read public service commission orders, utility tariffs, and filings and understand the impact to the business. 
  • In addition to understanding the impact, this individual will also be able to convert regulatory language into quantitative measures such as reporting requirements.  
  • The incumbent will be able utilize internal systems such as Sales Force and the company’s data mart to develop strategic reporting tools, as well as fulfilling utility commission reporting obligations.  
  • The current database utilized for analytics exceeds 50,000 records and contains the attributes for interconnection requests in excess of 25,000 MW in total with approximately 13,000 MW active and remaining in the queue in DEP and DEC across both North Carolina and South Carolina. 
  • NEM interconnections have grown from 1 MW to nearly 80 MW in NC alone and over 300 MW across all six jurisdictions. 
  • DEP and DEC have connected over 19,000 customers across both NC and SC. 
  • This activity will only continue to increase with the NC rebate program and increasing activity elsewhere.      
  • This position is also responsible for interacting with teams responsible for conducting operational studies in each jurisdiction to help ensure that all costs associated with renewables and especially solar resources are accurately identified and recovered through tariffs and interconnection agreement contracts.
  • This operational impact function focuses on generation, transmission and distribution functions.
  • These operational impact studies are and will be performed for all 6 jurisdictions and are critical to the NEM, value of solar, value of grid dockets and hearings as the company and this team navigates the fast moving, rapidly changing, complicated and contentious landscape related to distributed generation and distributed energy technology. 
  • This position will manage and direct contract and consulting resources particularly with regard to electric system planning and analysis related to renewable integration

Qualifications

  • Masters or advanced degree in Engineering, Business, Accounting, Computer Science, Data Analysis or related field, or equivalent training, professional and technical expertise.
  • 10 or more years of direct work related experience with database design, information management technology or strategy, regulated utility business drivers, and at least 2 of the following: financial accounting, regulatory compliance filings/proceedings, performance metrics, management reporting

Specific Requirements:

  • Prior exposure to big data analysis, market research and evaluation of emerging technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated, independent, proactive, organized and innovative individual.
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing business priorities.
  • Available to travel 15% - 25% of the time.
