~ The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) regulates construction on all flood plains and floodways in the state to protect life and property; and to promote the orderly development and wise use of Iowa's flood plains. ~

The Flood Plain Management and Dam Safety Section of the Iowa DNR is responsible for reviewing flood plain construction projects to ensure the project is less susceptible to flooding, calculating base flood elevations to provide homeowners with information regarding their risk of flooding, working with local governments to provide flood plain mapping information and technical assistance, and making sure all dams in Iowa are constructed and maintained per the state's criteria.

Position Overview

The Iowa DNR has a job vacancy for an Environmental Engineer, within the Flood Plain Management and Dam Safety Section in Des Moines, Iowa.

Responsibilities

  • The primary responsibilities for this position are to conduct a technical analysis of proposed flood plain development projects to determine if the project meets the state's criteria, calculate base flood elevations for landowners and provide overall flood plain management technical assistance to Iowans.
  • The candidate should have the ability to use GIS data and analyze hydraulic and hydrologic models to determine flood plain and floodway; determine if a construction project is located on the 100 year flood plain and prepare detailed documentation regarding each flood plain project review.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental, Sanitary, Civil, Chemical, Nuclear, Mechanical, Industrial, Agricultural, Biomedical, or Public Health Engineering;

OR

  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners.

Key Abilities and Skills:

  • Applicants must be able to develop a working knowledge of the DNR's flood plain management program, including the ability to analyze complex hydraulic and hydrologic data, along with the use of computer software models such as HEC-RAS to determine floodway and flood plain impacts;
  • Provide customer assistance related to basic flood plain management principles;
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbal presentations; and
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with customers.

Compensation

  • The starting salary for a new employee in this position will be $52,478.40.
  • The starting salary for new state (Executive Branch) employees will be at the base of the pay range.
  • This position offers a competitive salary schedule and benefit package.
