For nearly 25 years, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy has protected and cared for the region’s natural, scenic, farm and forest lands.

With the support of individual donors, foundations and volunteers, and the partnership of local, state, and federal agencies, we have protected more than 40,000 acres of land and 124 miles of shoreline along the region’s exceptional rivers, lakes and streams.

Fully accredited by the Land Trust Alliance, the Conservancy is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with our own by-laws, policies, board, budget and staff. Our service area includes Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Manistee Counties.

Position Overview

The Invasive Species Crew Leader will work with Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) staff to implement restoration efforts funded through the Great Lake Restoration Initiative and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The primary responsibilities of this position include leading 2 Invasive Species Crew Members in the management of invasive species in the Petobego State Game Area to support the protection of habitat suitable to the eastern massasauga rattlesnake and other rare herpetofauna and collection of data for grant reporting purposes.

  • Reports To: Preserve Stewardship Staff

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, ecology, or related discipline

OR

  • Currently seeking a bachelor’s degree in a natural resource management or related discipline and two years (seasons) of field experience

Work Experience:

  • Previous experience in natural resource management, particularly in invasive species management
  • Experience working with chainsaws and other common landscaping tools
  • Experience with herbicides, including safety, proper storage, mixing, and application preferred
  • Experience in the identification of native and invasive plants, especially wetland species

Skills:

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in strenuous conditions
  • Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate (Categories 5 and 6) or ability and willingness to obtain certificate (required – cost covered by GTRLC)
  • Strong plant identification skills
  • Strong invasive species treatment knowledge
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Strong and proven leader with experience directing and coordinating work crews
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills with a commitment to follow-through and an attention to detail
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS and Collector for ArcGIS is preferred

Other:

  • Able to work flexible hours
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Work Environment:

  • The Invasive Species Crew Leader will primarily work in the field to lead Invasive Species Crew Members in the management of invasive plants in the Petobego State Game Area, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources owned property
  • Additional responsibilities of the crew leader will include tracking herbicide use, collection of treatment data, and reporting sightings of herpetofauna at the work site
  • Field work will involve traversing uneven, marshy, and submerged terrain in areas with insect pests, and may require lifting and carrying equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must have a willingness to mechanically control invasive plants, sometimes requiring the use of chainsaws or other landscaping tools, and be willing to work with chemical herbicides
  • While field and safety equipment will be supplied, the successful applicant must have consistent access to appropriate attire for field work (boots, long plants, long sleeves)

Compensation

  • Wage: $16/Hour
  • Housing May Be Available, If Needed
  • Status: Non-Exempt, Full Time, Seasonal 12-Week Position, Not Eligible for Benefits
