Position Overview

The Town of Vail is now hiring an Environmental Sustainability Coordinator to join the town in our stewardship and protection of our unique mountain environment. This position will implement actions identified under the Environmental Sustainability Strategic Plan and adopted environmental programs, including waste diversion and recycling programs, transportation, energy efficiency, public education and communication, community events, special events, and ecosystem health.  

Responsibilities

Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Encourage compliance and participation in the community-recycling ordinance through education and site visits
  • Track funds from the “kick the bag habit” program and coordinate waste diversion events
  • Monitor the community recycling site, schedule hauls and maintenance
  • Coordinate the Sole Power Challenge green commuting program
  • Assist public works and transit departments in community electrification efforts
  • Grant writing for cross-departmental programs related to sustainability programs
  • Participate in sector task forces as part of community climate action efforts
  • Implementation and monitoring of Mountain IDEAL indicators for the sustainable destination certification program
  • Provide sustainability program feedback in the design review process through the design review team
  • Implement the Celebrate Green, green events program through the Event Review Committee and review of special event permitting
  • Assist with sustainable business certification of town facilities through the Actively Green business program
  • Annual community event planning (clean up day, America Recycles Day, electronic waste recycling and household hazardous waste collection events, etc.)
  • Support efforts in protection of ecosystem health and the implementation of the Gore Creek Water Quality Strategic Plan
  • Serve as the department representative on the Town’s Safety Committee
  • Coordinate the town’s employee Green Team implementing employee sustainability efforts across departments
  • Data management of town utility and waste diversion data (tracking, reporting)

Qualifications

Qualified applicants must be passionate about environmental sustainability, have excellent public speaking skills and be comfortable representing the Community Development department in all venues.

In addition they must meet the following requirements:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in environmental sustainability, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field or equivalent experience required.  (masters degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a related field including a strong technical knowledge of environmental systems.
  • LEED Green Associate Credentials or higher (or ability to earn within 6 months of hire)

Compensation

  • $60,408 - $87,592
