~ Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG) is a non-profit museum for plants and our mission is to enrich life by promoting the enjoyment of plants and the environment through beautiful gardens and educational programs. ~

Norfolk Botanical Garden is managed by the Norfolk Botanical Garden Society, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported by donations, membership dues, admissions & program fees.

Position Overview

Seeking an experienced, creative and self-directed individual to expand and implement a variety of high quality adult programming with a focus on environmental education. The Adult Education Manager oversees all aspects of program management and implementation. Supervises full time and part-time staff as well as volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates all logistics and scheduling of adult educational programming. Includes producing a quarterly course calendar and catalog.
  • Recruits well-qualified instructors within the staff, professional organizations and freelance experts. Also serves as a regular instructor.
  • Works with the Director of Environmental Engagement and Outreach to develop and implement education goals and objectives.
  • Establish performance metrics as a tool for program development and expansion.
  • Manages and tracks program budget.
  • Manage course scheduling, program implementation and other duties as assigned.
  • Assists Director of Environmental Engagement and Outreach with development of interpretive material.
  • Collaborates with the education team to develop program content to enhance both youth and adult programming.
  • Attends committee and staff meetings as assigned.
  • Supervises Volunteer Coordinator who oversees NBG’s robust volunteer program.
  • Oversees the management of the NBG’s Huette Horticultural Library.
  • Support Education Department and organizational functions as assigned. Functions include but not limited to general program development, special events and outreaches. May include weekend and evening shifts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture, environmental education or related field of study preferred.
  • Extensive work experience in related field strongly considered.
  • Prior supervisory and budget experience preferred.
  • Must have strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to compile and report data, track program performance is ideal.
  • Expertise in writing/creating interpretive content and signage is a plus.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills a must.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and as needed.
  • Duties take place inside and outside, in all weather conditions.
  • State background check and valid driver’s license required.

Compensation

  • $34,000-40,000 annually
  • full benefits package
