The Institute of Agriculture houses the Land Grant component of the university and consists of AgResearch, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Extension, and College of Veterinary Medicine. The Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science brings broad engineering and scientific expertise to issues of sustainable development and resource stewardship.  The vibrant department is comprised of over 30 teaching, research, extension (or a combination thereof) faculty.  Specific topics include productive and sustainable agriculture, soil and water resource management, impacts of climate change, machines and systems for optimized performance, construction science, and fuels and value-added products from renewable resources.  The department produces well-prepared and motivated graduates (BS through PhD), discover new knowledge through research, and share that knowledge by engaging with scientific communities, industries and agencies, and individuals throughout Tennessee and the world.

Position Overview

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) is looking for vibrant, dynamic individuals interested in working in a team environment dedicated to student success in the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science. The Student Success Advisor (Senior Advisor II) will provide comprehensive academic advising and support holistic student success for undergraduate students pursuing or interested in majors or minors within the department. The position will promote academic advising as an essential tool for academic success and as a critical component of the educational experience.

This is an exempt, 12 month, full time, non-tenure track staff position that provides an exciting opportunity to be a part of UT s Advising 2020 strategic plan that integrates academic and career advising with self-exploration, leadership, and experience learning. The Student Success Advisor position responsibilities are grounded in best practices as outlined in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Academic Advisor Career Path. A person holding this position will be expected to create professional development plans with their supervisor that will include advancement on the Career Path.

Responsibilities

Advising responsibilities include, though are not limited to:

  • Advising first year and transfer students with course selection to meet academic requirements and their career goals, identifying experiential learning opportunities and programs that promote career development, and support holistic student success.
  • This person will be the primary coordinator for services related to new student and transfer orientation advising sessions, student success programming, and assist with/participate in activities related to professional/career development.
  • The position will foster students intellectual and personal development towards academic success, major selection and academic plan development that aligns with strengths and aspirations, and advise students on policies and procedures of the University, CASNR, and the Department.
  • The Student Success Advisor will be a critical team member of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Dean s office and the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science. 

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Education: Masters Degree
  • Experience: 2 or more years of professional experience working in an advising capacity within a college or university.

Preferences:

  • Education: Masters in Education, Higher Education, College Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Student Development, Counseling, or related area.
  • Experience: Thorough working knowledge of academic advising practices and student development theory, significant advising experience in higher education, some teaching experience in higher education, passion for sustainability, working knowledge of student information systems such as DARS, BANNER, GradesFirst or related software, some familiarity/experience in life skills and academic coaching, excellent oral and written communication skills, experience in conducting assessments and implementing improvements, experience in developing and creating student retention strategies, experience in working in a team oriented environment, experience in working and collaborating with faculty and campus partners.

Compensation: Pay Grade: 40
