Position Overview

Want to help dairy and livestock farmers?

We are seeking candidates for the position of Forage and Nutrition Agronomist. We're looking for a motivated person to help organic and conventional dairy and livestock farmers make good planting and management decisions with their forages. You should be knowledgeable about crops utilized as livestock feed, starting with corn silage and alfalfa.

You also should have knowledge (or a strong desire to learn about) other annual and perennial forage and hay species, cover crops and their associated forage potential, small grains, and native grass forage species. Having an understanding of pasture establishment, pasturing systems, and management would be a plus.

We’ll need you to keep learning about the benefits and shortcomings of such crops and make recommendations that fit the seasonal needs of each farm.

Hours of Work

Generally, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm M-F, with 1-2 Saturdays/month (3 Saturdays in March, April, May) 

Responsibilities 

  • Understand the feed values (quality and tonnage) of each crop and influence they have on each livestock species and their fit into a feed ration. (You will not need to develop feed rations for individual farms, but you should be an informed adviser.)
  • Provide management solutions for all forage species on various soil types and levels of soil fertility.
  • Advise on planting requirements, fertility, disease and pest management, and harvest.
  • Grow customer base by fielding phone calls, emails, and walk-in customers looking for seed solutions and agronomic advice for their livestock operations.
  • Perform on-farm farm visits to dairy and livestock farms as needed to understand customers farm operations and to provide solutions to various situations.
  • Train our sales team to better meet the needs of our customers.
  • Coordinate internal research and feed quality testing of current and experimental varieties.
  • Assist in development of sales and marketing strategies to promote products.
  • Be motivated to work with both certified organic and conventional farmers. 

Qualifications 

Education and Experience 

  • BS in animal science, plant science, or a related field
  • Very good written and oral communication skills
  • Technical proficiency in MS Office Suite, especially Word & Excel; PowerPoint
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge in livestock farming or nutrition experience preferred
