Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) is a regional development bank. The Project "Accelerating Renewable Energy Investment in Central America" (ARECA) is the result of an alliance between CABEI, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This project is aimed at supporting small and medium scale renewable energy projects in six Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
CABEI will participate in the financing of specific projects, through the US$ 25 million of direct lending which it has committed to support this initiative and US$ 600,000 for technical assistance. The ARECA Project also functions with resources provided by GEF, which are used to provide partial guarantees to intermediary financial institutions. All small projects that seek to generate renewable energy through natural means are eligible. This includes hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, bio-mass, and solar (among others). Up to $1 million is available from CABEI.
