Biography

The Global Environment Facility was established in October 1991 as a $1 billion pilot program in the World Bank to assist in the protection of the global environment and to promote environmental sustainable development. The GEF is an independent financial organization that provides grants to projects in developing countries for projects that benefit the global environment and promote sustainable livelihoods in local communities.  GEF grants support projects related to biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants.

We have a wide variety of funding mechanisms including project funding for full and medium sized projects (FSPs and MSPs) which are above and up to $1 million dollars respectively. Project concepts may be developed by governments, non-governmental organizations, communities, the private sector, or other civil society entities, and must respond to both national priorities and GEF focal area strategies and operational programs, and must satisfy eligibility requirements under the Conventions.

GEF allocates and disburses hundreds of millions of dollars per year in projects in energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable urban transport and sustainable management of land use, land-use change, and forestry. Till 2009, the GEF has invested US$2.7 billion to support climate change mitigation projects in developing countries and economies in transition, and leveraged another US$17.2 billion in project cofinancing.
