Biography

The Natural Capital Investment Fund (NCIF) is a business loan fund that provides debt and equity financing to small businesses located in North Carolina, Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and West Virginia.

The revolving loan & equity investment fund makes capital available to emerging natural resource-based businesses in rural West Virginia.
The Institute’s Entrepreneurial Training & Development Program helps rural entrepreneurs identify business opportunities, acquire technology and create business plans for sustainable ventures. Through demonstration projects, training workshops and hands-on intern programs, entrepreneurs learn about topics as diverse as aquaculture, using hydroponics to raise high value produce and Internet-based marketing.

The investment strategy is to identify projects in which a modest amount of investment capital will reduce the risk enough to attract banks and commercial lenders. Companies at any stage of development are considered, but the company must have strong management in place and have the capacity to generate jobs in the target area.

Eligible activies include specialty agriculture, aquaculture, value-added wood products, ecotourism related enterprises, and businesses whose products add value to renewable resources. Typical investments range between $50,000 to $250,000. The Natural Capital Investment Fund (NCIF) is a nonprofit certified Community Development Financial Institution.

We have a number of investments in natural food products (Blue Smoke Salsa, Annie’s Natural Bakery, Sunny Hollow Farms), Sustainable Tourism (Songer Whitewater, Wilderness Voyageurs, Cabins on Miller Ridge), Forest Products (Laurel Creek Hardwoods, Gauley Mountain Molding), and environmental services (Altamont Environmental).
