The Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF) is a multilateral financial institution that promotes the sustainable development of its shareholder countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Jamaica, Paraguay, Trinidad, and Tobago, Uruguay) and regional integration.
CAF’s PLAC + E program provides funding for clean energy, greenhouse gas reduction projects, energy and resource efficiency. KfW, the German bank, in conjunction with the CAF developed the "Program for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency KfW – CAF" which, through a line of credit in cheaper financing terms, seeks to encourage the implementation of new renewable energy and efficiency energy. CAF also facilitates the acquisition of carbon credits by outside parties.
CAF is interested in a wide variety of projects including: clean and alternative energy with an emphasis on wind sources, geothermal, small scale hydro, biomass, biogas; electrical transmission, national, transnational or improved efficiency in networked systems; methane capture and use plants for energy purposes in wastewater treatment, industrial and urban or landfills; energy efficiency schemes to reduce energy consumption; reducing methane leakage in mining, oil and gas; carbon capture or sequestration in reforestation, afforestation and avoided deforestation; replacing fossil fuels by less carbon-intensive sources or renewable; and more efficient transport systems, urban mass transit and road infrastructure for vehicular traffic optimization.
