~ LightHawk accelerates conservation success through the powerful perspective of flight ~

Position Overview

LightHawk is seeking a Western Program Director to develop, implement, and fund strategic conservation projects in the western portion of North America. The Western Program Director (WPD) will fill the critical role of ensuring that LightHawk resources are dedicated to the most important conservation projects in North America.

The WPD is responsible for the analysis of conservation issues in the west, deciding where LightHawk can play a valuable role, positioning LightHawk as a critical partner in those projects, planning and implementing flight campaigns to achieve conservation outcomes, and finding funding to support the projects. This position will require frequent travel, sometimes with short notice, throughout the country and could include travel to Mexico or Canada.

Where is the Job Located?

Our preference is for applicants living in the Fort Collins, CO area to work in an office-based position with some telecommuting potential. For the right candidate, a home-based employee could be considered in the Western US with easy access to a major airport.

This position reports to LightHawk’s Chief Program Officer located in Ft. Collins, Colorado.

Responsibilities

  • The WPD works closely with LightHawk’s Program Coordinators to implement flight campaigns and will serve as backup for flight logistics for the region. It is not necessary to have a long history of aviation, but it is necessary that the WPD understands and appreciates the tremendous commitment LightHawk Volunteer Pilots make.
  • Volunteer pilots are the lifeblood of LightHawk, and it will be the WPD’s responsibility to create projects that maximize their donation of flight through real, tangible outcomes.

What are the Big Pieces of this Job?

  • Project and Partner Development (40%) - Including regional strategy setting, pro-active outreach to key partners in Strategic Projects, and working with partners to design flight campaigns that result in real conservation outcomes.
  • Program Funding Development (30%) - The position will work closely with LightHawk’s Advancement staff to identify funding sources for projects in the Western Region, develop relationships with foundation staff and key donors, create compelling proposals, and report on grant progress, both in writing and in person.
  • Outcome Discovery and Documentation (20%) - Including following up with partners on flights and projects in order to determine what happened as a result of the flight, documenting in our Salesforce CRM, and working with Advancement staff to share that with our broader community.
  • Volunteer Pilot Recruitment and Retention (10%) - Including participating in and/or leading pilot recruitment efforts to support Strategic Projects, educating current pilots about projects and recognizing volunteers.

Qualifications

Who Should Apply

  • We are looking for an experienced conservation professional (6+ years) with a strong understanding of conservation planning including an understanding of Open Standards, partnership development, a personal network of conservation contacts, and a proven track record of making things happen.
  • A basic understanding of communication or marketing techniques is helpful as well.
  • Candidates for this position should possess a keen interest in both aviation and the environment, the volunteer-based model, experience working with diverse, highly-skilled volunteers, and excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • We are a Salesforce-based organization, and as such, the candidate must have the willingness and aptitude to track work within a sophisticated CRM and Project Management system (training provided).
  • The right person for this job will have a proactive “can-do” attitude, a professional and friendly presence in person and over the phone, a passion for getting the details right, and good follow-through on commitments.
  • If you are that person, you have already demonstrated the ability to work independently with minimum supervision, and set priorities when faced with multiple deadlines.
  • You are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and have a passion for protecting our planet. You will be the face of LightHawk to our conservation partners and funders.
  • You’ve most likely been a conservation practitioner for six or more years, working independently to develop conservation projects and partnerships that result in real, tangible outcomes.

Compensation: This is a full-time salaried position. $50,000-$55,000 annual salary range, based on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage, annual vacation and sick leave, 401K plan, and reasonable scheduling flexibility.
