Position Overview

MSC is seeking a US Public Relations Manager. The position is based in our Washington DC office.

The Public Relations Manager leads MSC's engagement with US media. This position reports to the Senior Marketing and Communications Manager in Seattle, working closely with MSC’s Global Public Relations team based in London.

This role is central in shaping the MSC’s story with American news media and influencers. This includes design and delivery of strategies which raise the profile of the MSC by driving earned media coverage.

Responsibilities

Lead media engagement strategy and activities with the aim of establishing the MSC as the leading voice for sustainable seafood in the US.

  • Develop and implement public relations and communication plans, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast and online media.
  • Act as spokesperson for the MSC in the US, author and edit press releases, briefings, byline articles and develop content for MSC communications.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and partners on communications initiatives from development to release to ensure the strongest stories are told with appropriate use of resources.
  • Lead MSC U.S. partner (B2B) newsletter initiative. Author timely, relevant content to inform and engage commercial and fishery partners.
  • Manage reactive PR issues; proactively manage seafood industry press to build profile and support for the MSC.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the MSC program and seafood industry trends to make appropriate recommendations regarding external media.
  • With a strong background in leading the development, delivery and measurement of public relations, this role will build the MSC’s external voice in the US market through thought leadership and content marketing initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism/ public relations or communications; Master’s degree desirable.
  • Significant, proven professional experience in media relations, public relations, journalism, or communications. 7+ years full time experience desired.
  • Excellence in spoken and written communication; proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
  • Proven ability to develop and lead planning, coordination and execution of PR and media strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize information from multiple sources to craft key messages and create a clear concise story.
  • Ability to influence and lead both internal and external stakeholders.  Experience dealing with corporate-level issues management.
  • Proficiency developing and managing media lists, media calendars and media reporting.
  • Project experience with a variety of media, including digital: CRM/email, digital and video; comprehension of web and social analytics.
  • Experience working with technical and scientific content to produce non-expert briefings and responses.
  • Experience managing agencies.
  • Desirable: experience working with designers and commissioning multimedia (e.g. video / photography).

  • Must be a self-starter with drive to continuously identify new approaches and solutions; a high level of creativity is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize multiple assignments. Exceptional teambuilding and interpersonal skills – including the ability to represent the MSC at the highest levels internally and externally.
  • Outstanding project management and leadership skills are essential for building media and MSC stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to counsel executives regarding message content and delivery.  Versatility to combine self-management and self-support when working alone with productive team membership and leadership.
