Position Overview 

Primary Role

Lead company-wide environmental sustainability initiatives by developing strategies, objectives and targets to drive continuous improvement throughout Shire's value chain. Support the broader Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) organization and Corporate Responsibility program through providing input to Shire's Responsibility strategy & goals, coordinating EHS-related communications, and supporting stakeholder engagement initiatives.

Responsibilities

60% Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Programs:

  • Lead the development of objectives, targets and programs to drive improvement to include the development of a company climate change strategy and development of global energy efficiency, water conservation, emissions reduction and renewable energy programs. Quantify reductions and cost savings from program implementation.
  • Manage global operational sustainability data, providing site support and rolling up global data for external reporting. Facilitate annual third party verification of EHS data.
  • Develop programs to measure and reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Lead "beyond compliance" product stewardship initiatives and identify opportunities to reduce the social and environmental impacts of products while adding business value using life cycle management and circular economy approaches.
  • Facilitate pilot project to identify reuse and recycling opportunities for patients using our therapies and associated devices. If proven successful, expand and scale based on key learnings.
  • Work with Commercial team to identify environmentally sustainable product and service offerings that add market value.
  • Act as the liaison between EHS and the Procurement Center of Excellence to ensure supplier data reporting needs are being met (e.g., Sustainability, Materials/Chemicals, Packaging, Conflict Minerals).
  • Support and guide Technical Operations operating unit and manufacturing facility environmental sustainability initiatives including supporting green building and process efficiency improvements.
  • Support supplier and contract manufacturing sustainability initiatives to help hold suppliers accountable to EHS standards and to drive EHS performance improvements through the Shire supply chain.
  • Partner with Engineering to create a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement in energy/water efficiency and cost reduction at each Shire manufacturing location and identify opportunities that lead to a favorable return on investment.

40%: Communications and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Provide EHS inputs into the annual responsibility reporting to include data, case studies and other qualitative content.
  • Coordinate EHS-related responses to sustainability-related inquiries from NGOs, media, investors, shareholders, customers, patient organizations, industry/trade organizations and governments.
  • Maintain database and records on all stakeholder inquiries on sustainability to report out to internal stakeholders on sustainability trends and in line with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 requirements.
  • Facilitate the response to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (EHS-related content), Carbon Disclosure Project, Newsweek Green Rankings and other surveys as needed.
  • Perform benchmarking and maintain knowledge to inform environmental sustainability strategy.
  • Develop plan to engage employees globally in environmental sustainability including engagement platforms for Earth Day and/or World Environment Day to further embed sustainability into the Shire culture.
  • Organize annual EHS conference - develop agenda and promote/communicate to all EHS staff globally.
  • Actively participate in multi-stakeholder and professional organizations such as Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), GreenBiz, NAEM and the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative.
  • Represent the EHS function in the overall development of Shire's Corporate Responsibility strategy and objectives and help to facilitate Responsibility Committee activities.

Qualifications 

Essential

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • BS degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or Sustainability (other engineering or science-related degrees will be considered on a case by case basis).
  • 10+ years experience in a global (corporate or multi-site) setting with 5+ years experience leading Sustainability or other company-wide EHS initiatives
  • Demonstrated understanding of global sustainability issues and experience with EHS management systems (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001).

Desired

  • An MS degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in analyzing, trending and presenting data to uncover significant aspects and risks to be managed and/or capitalized on.

Other Job Requirements

  • This position is primarily business office based.
  • Occasional work at manufacturing facilities is possible. When at manufacturing sites, candidate must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. no make-up, jewelry, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in manufacturing work environments. May involve occasional work in a cold, hot, high-noise, or wet environment.
  • Due to the need to support a global team across multiple time zones, some work may be required outside of the standard 8-hour workday including weekends.
  • Ability to operate a car (valid driver's license) and travel via air, rail or other means of passenger conveyance. Initially, potential travel for this position will be up to 20%. Travel required for this position may increase after the 1st year.
