Position Overview

ACC currently has an opportunity for Senior Director, Science and Technical Services for its Responsible Care and Value Outreach Department. ACC represents its members on public policy issues; coordinates the industry’s research and testing programs; and administers Responsible Care®, the industry’s environment, health, safety and security performance improvement initiative.

Responsibilities

The position is responsible for designing, implementing and executing technical, scientific, and related policy strategy within the Value Chain Outreach program. The position will be a primary interface with key downstream market users, solution providers, standards setters and science organizations on issues related to scientific methods for chemical evaluation in the private sector. The position works closely with key internal staff and external stakeholders and reports directly to the Vice President, Responsible Care and Value Chain Outreach.

Major Duties:

  • Develops and executes strategy for the promotion of risk, science, and life cycle approaches to chemical/material selection in key chemicals value chains.
  • Serves as a technical expert on relevant value chain issues such as ingredient disclosure, risk and hazard assessment, lifecycle assessment, alternatives assessment, multi-attribute evaluation, product certifications and voluntary consensus standards and eco-labels.
  • Leads engagement with third-parties, scientific bodies, brands and retailers related to scientific analysis issues to promote approaches consistent with ACC principles.
  • Manages direction and activities of ACC member groups and staff teams as assigned.
  • Coordinates value chain activities among other ACC departments (e.g., Plastics, Chemical Products & Technology, Responsible Care, and Regulatory & Technical). 
  • Participates in the design of ACC advocacy strategies on key value chain technical and policy issues.
  • Collaborates with and communicates to key stakeholders on behalf of the chemical industry, seeking strategic relationships, alliances and partnerships.
  • Leads the development of positions, communications, marketing tools and materials to support ACC’s value chain outreach program. 

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, toxicology, chemical engineering or related degree.
  • 10 or more years professional work experience.
  • Proven experience in risk assessment, science policy, public policy or related field.
  • Experience in chemical or related industry or policy organization.
  • Ability to design strategy, direction and action plans.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, as well as the ability to give internal and public presentations.
  • Ability to work independently on a variety of complex matters simultaneously.
  • Ability to lead membership groups.
