Position Overview

The County of San Mateo's Office of Sustainability is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Resource Conservation Specialist I/II related to energy efficiency and water conservation. We want "sustainability champions" to empower our departments, employees and our community members to embrace sustainability more fully and use resources more efficiently.

At this time, we will be hiring up to two limited-term Resource Conservation Specialist positions. This recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies. 

Responsibilities

As part of our Energy and Water Group, you will:

  • Help the County and cities use energy more efficiently, and transition to new state building standards and zero net energy
  • Help the San Mateo County Energy Watch, Bay Area Regional Energy Network and other programs meet energy-savings goals
  • Support the development and implementation of water conservation and other water initiatives
  • Develop and contribute your ideas and talents to improve the programs and services we offer

Qualifications

A typical way to qualify is a Bachelor's degree and one or more years of experience in the field of sustainability, which has included program analysis and coordination. The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Experience in water efficiency or related programs, energy efficiency, energy auditing and/or building performance field
  • Familiarity with LEED, ZNE and the current and future California Building Codes
  • A college degree in Environmental Science, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy, Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • A Master's degree is a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills – a natural marketer that easily connects with people
  • Communication skills – a team player with both verbal and written acumen
  • Strong analytical skills – experienced in conducting research and analyzing data
  • Independence – can "hit the ground running" and work with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility – able to change course quickly and effectively
  • A desire to be a part of changing the energy future in San Mateo County
