Position Description

ACEEE seeks a Research Analyst to focus on industrial energy efficiency technologies, practices, and policies for its Industry program. The position provides a balance of research, analysis, and technical advocacy on a broad range of issues related to energy efficiency in manufacturing and other energy-intensive sectors of the economy. This is an exciting position for someone looking to have real world impact in improving the efficiency of industrial equipment, processes, advancing programs, and policies that encourage greater uptake of energy efficiency improvements.

Expectations and Responsibilities

The research analyst will have a variety of research opportunities working with a well-respected and widely recognized team of industrial efficiency experts and collaborating with other programs across a dynamic organization. The core responsibilities of the position include:

  • Conducting research and analysis evaluating new technologies and practices, programs and policies to advance energy efficiency in the industrial sector. Specific research areas will likely include strategic energy management (SEM) energy efficiency programs, smart manufacturing, minimum energy performance standards (MEPS), voluntary product labeling protocols, and the use of information and communication technologies to effect additional energy savings and enable emerging energy markets.
  • Contributing to analysis and stakeholder engagement with the Department of Energy appliance standards process and other federal and state level efficiency programs
  • Providing industry sector analysis to cross-cutting program projects, which may include federal policy analysis, ACEEE energy efficiency scorecard projects, and policies related to combined heat and power (CHP).
  • Developing and implementing updates to the content on ACEEE’s website.
  • Coordinating program development for ACEEE’s biennial Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry and other events.

Note: The position requires excellent organizational and project management skills, deadline and time management, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to perform multiple tasks, and work professionally as part of a team. The research analyst should have knowledge of how to develop a research project, collect and assimilate data, write up findings and formulate policy recommendations.

  • Highly analytical and detail-oriented. The analyst will conduct rigorous and peer-reviewed primary research dealing with complex quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills. The analyst is expected to produce detailed research reports, white papers, fact sheets, and regulatory comments, and to present research results through formal presentations, webinars, and blog posts.
  • Superb organizational and project coordination skills. The position requires experience coordinating complex, long-term projects independently and as part of teams. The analyst must also balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. He/she will coordinate and collaborate with numerous ACEEE staff members on cross-cutting research projects. The analyst must also maintain relationships with external stakeholders to inform research and broaden the reach of ACEEE research and technical assistance.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter and quick-learner. The analyst must be able to work independently.
  • Tech-savvy and quick learner. The analyst will need to consult with other ACEEE staff to stay apprised of energy efficiency policies and programs. The analyst will also contribute to pages on ACEEE’s website.
  • Public speaking. The analyst will give public presentations at conferences and engage in outreach to research project and outreach initiative stakeholders. Will occasionally talk with the press. Occasional travel with overnight stays expected. 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of work experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with energy efficiency practices, programs, policy, and technologies
  • General knowledge of industrial/manufacturing sector, business operations, and business investment considerations
  • Familiarity with the intersection of environmental and energy efficiency issues
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to represent an organization externally
  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of work experience, or
  • A Masters’ degree and 3 years of experience
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field including policy analysis, energy, engineering, or science
  • Contributor to one or more significant research reports

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes ACEEE’s generous benefits package which includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan; transportation and bike share benefits; three weeks of vacation in the first year and four weeks thereafter.
