Renew Boston Outreach Fellow

~ Renew Boston is the City of Boston’s Residential Energy Efficiency Program in partnership with Mass Save, Eversource and National Grid. The program serves to educate and connect Boston’s residents and small businesses with energy efficiency resources such as energy assessments, insulation work and heating system replacements. Renew Boston plays an important role in the Mayor’s Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by the year 2020, and the Mayor’s new commitment to be carbon free by the year 2050. ~

Position Overview

Renew Boston Fellow for Neighborhood Outreach and Digital Marketing

The Renew Boston Fellow will work closely with the Renew Boston Program Manager to develop new and innovative strategies for outreach. Those strategies should include a mix of online and offline engagement, meaning that the Fellow should be just as comfortable developing a digital marketing campaign as he/she is leading a community workshop.

• Reports to: Renew Boston Program Manager
• Duration of Fellowship from August 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018

Responsibilities

The Renew Boston Outreach Fellow will be responsible for:

• Developing a work plan to identify and engage key community stakeholders;
• Testing digital strategies for reaching new audiences; with a focus on renters and millennials.
• Participating and leading workshops in target neighborhoods and communities;
• Working closely with property owners, landlords and renters to ease the adoption of energy efficiency programs and services;
• Working closely with our existing partners, such as Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) and Boston Home Center (DND), to help streamline complex energy efficiency programs and services;
• Communicating complex energy and climate issues in understandable and engaging ways;
• Brainstorming and testing new outreach tactics; and
• Tracking and reporting metrics associated but not limited to Boston’s Climate Action Plan. 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work closely with the Greenovate Boston Editorial team to write content for the Renew Boston landing page, focusing on blog posts and event invites, and social media platforms; 
• Writing Renew Boston emails, newsletters, and e-invites;
  Writing content for offline outreach materials such as factsheets, brochures, posters, etc.; 
• Developing in-person workshop curriculum and presentations; and;
• Addressing resident questions and concerns in a one-on-one or group setting. 

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

• 1-2 years experience working in a community setting (e.g. student, volunteer, or religious group);
• Demonstrated ability to commit to a team-oriented task or project;
• Possess active listening skills that can be applied to community concerns from the position of a municipal employee;
• Experience with online communications channels and social media;
• Ability to work offsite and after hours, occasionally on weekends, on an at-need basis and with advance notice;
• Possess a valid Driver’s License for use of the City’s Fleet Hub or have reliable transportation;
• Candidates that are bilingual (speaking, reading, writing and translation) will be highly considered; and
• Candidates with a strong knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods will be highly considered.  
   

Note: Additionally, the Fellow will have access to numerous opportunities to expand on his or her interests or skills, outside of what is outlined above, through opportunities within the Environment Department and throughout Boston City Hall. Examples of these opportunities include clean-up efforts of Boston conservation lands, experience with the City’s building and energy teams, participating in service-oriented activities with the Office of Neighborhood Services, and more.

Compensation: This fellow will receive a stipend of $20 per hour. 35 Hours per week.
