Description

~ The Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) is part of the National Science Foundation’s Long Term Ecological Research Network. BES conducts ecological research in the Baltimore area including studies on streams and watersheds, vegetation and animal diversity and human interactions with the environment. ~

Popular education programs at BES include our annual Teacher Institute, a year-long professional development program for middle and high school teachers, the Baltimore Data Jam Competition, an art and science competition for middle and high school students, and BES YES, a summer young environmental scientist field and mentorship program.

Our programs support students and teachers in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and the surrounding five counties. We approach education from the stance that all students should have direct, authentic experiences with ecology and the environment as they work their way to becoming an environmentally literate citizen.
