Position Overview

New England Science & Sailing (NESS) is looking for an Operations Coordinator and Marine Systems Technician. The ideal candidate will be motivated, able to work within a team as well as independently and will report directly to the NESS Operations Director.

The primary responsibility of the Operations Coordinators is the oversight of the maintenance and safe operation of NESS's 30 outboard powered vessels, requiring the right applicant to have an excellent working knowledge of outboard maintenance with experience in the marine maintenance industry.

The Operations Coordinator and Marine Systems Technician will work independently to complete the basic maintenance, winterizing, commissioning and other routine projects to support NESS's fleet and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Operations Director to ensure safe vessel maintenance and operation
  • Troubleshoot and repair boats and outboard engines to include fiber glassing and electrical work
  • Commission and winterize vessels seasonally including pressure washing and boat covering
  • Identify potential maintenance issues and report to Operations Director
  • Transport boats on trailer and on the water, including safe navigation to various points throughout Long Island Sound
  • Maintain all vessel trailers
  • Ensure powerboats are receiving clean fuel and oil
  • Assist in maintaining large floating dock structure, moorings, and 2-ton hoist
  • Assist in maintaining all waterfront facilities

Qualifications

Education/Certifications

  • Technical degree in marine systems, outboard certification, or commensurate experience in marine industry
  • USCG license preferred (can be obtained at NESS once hired)
  • Waterfront Lifeguard certification preferred (can be obtained at NESS once hired)
  • CPR/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer certification preferred (can be obtained at NESS once hired)

Experience/Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of and experience with 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboard maintenance, including trouble shooting and proven history of outboard maintenance
  • Knowledge of fiberglass maintenance techniques
  • Strong vessel operation skills in close quarters and all weather conditions
  • Working knowledge of power tools and carpentry
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and complete projects on a timeline
  • Desire to work in a fast paced non-profit environment focused on providing high level hands on education
  • Desire to teach technical skills to other staff members and work closely with educational staff to support our educational mission
