Our mission at the Sustainable Food Trade Association (SFTA) is to build the capacity of the organic food trade to transition to sustainable business models. 

SFTA serves as a hub for businesses to learn, improve performance, communicate results, share common metrics and best practices. Thus, defining and driving excellence in environmentally sound, socially just business practices using a systems-based approach.

Position Overview:

The Membership Outreach and Sales position is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic approach to SFTA membership and development.

This includes recruitment and retention of SFTA members and soliciting funding such as sponsorships to support SFTA programs and services. This is an independent contractor position, responsible to the Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Actively develop and implement a strategic approach to new member recruitment and existing member retention. Respond to inquiries from potential new members.
  • Develop materials and communications to support membership recruitment and retention, including review of existing materials and communications and recommendations for improvements.
  • Develop and maintain a list of and actively recruit companies/organizations that are prospective members.
  • Provide brief report monthly outlining progress, success, challenges and any additional support or materials needed

Qualifications:

  • A desire to support the mission of SFTA: to build the capacity of the organic food trade to transition to sustainable business models.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with one-on-one sales and/or development
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize as well as work with a team
  • Adept at building relationships via phone, including cold calls.
  • A high degree of comfort in working the room at a networking event
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Outgoing personality
  • Familiarity with the organic business community
  • Familiarity with membership-based organization

Contract:

  • Terms on the contract including fee per hour or retainer, and length of contract to be negotiated.
  • Direct expenses related to SFTA, approved by Executive Director, will be reimbursed at actual cost.
  • Contractor will be responsible for their own business expenses, and any required taxes.
  • Contractor and Executive Director will develop a plan of work at the beginning of the contract, to be reviewed and changed as needed during the length of the contract.
