Position Overview

Reporting to the Communications and Marketing Director, the Communications and Marketing Manager will sit in a key position on a global function charged with organizational branding and messaging, media relations, social media, content marketing, web content, design and collateral, event marketing and production, and internal staff training on communications.

The team is charged with global responsibilities, with staff based in San Francisco, New York, and Paris. The Communications and Marketing team works closely with other parts of the organization, particularly BSR’s membership, consulting, and grants and development teams. This position will be based in BSR’s San Francisco office.

Working closely with the other members of the Communications team and leads from BSR’s project  teams, the Manager will execute communications and marketing campaigns, translating programmatic priorities  into content and promotional activities. This will include working with the Director and members of the Communications team to develop and execute strategies for demand-generation marketing and BSR’s editorial approach.

The Manager will also oversee the work of the Communications Coordinator and liaise with the organization’s graphic designer and web developer to deliver innovative and compelling content, social media and digital campaigns, and more. From time to time, he or she may also be involved in event, media, and other marketing activities.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of BSR’s content strategy and carry out monthly issue campaigns through multiple communications channels, as well as campaigns for major BSR initiative launches and activities.
  • Work with internal teams and on occasion, external agencies to explore new opportunities and new processes related to marketing lead generation, such as automated nurturing/Account Base Marketing (ABM), multi-language digital strategies with Paid Search (SEM) and Organic Search (SEO).
  • Act as editor-in-chief of the BSR blog, editing and working closely with staff authors to develop compelling blogs, published 2-5 times a week.
  • Ensure editorial excellence for all public written material.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with communications/marketing agencies, external publication channels, cross-promotional partners/sponsors for BSR events, and freelance editors.
  • Work closely with BSR staff to give them tools to be effective brand ambassadors.
  • Oversee the work of the Communications Coordinator and work closely with global team members and staff across BSR on communications and marketing priorities

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, media, journalism, or a related field; graduate degree preferred.
  • 4-6 years of work experience in a communications or marketing function with experience in one or more of the following: sustainable business, nonprofit communications/marketing, or one of BSR’s six areas of expertise (climate change, human rights, women’s empowerment, inclusion, supply chain, or sustainability management).
  • Experience and demonstrated success with automated marketing, lead generation, and paid and organic search strategies, platforms, and approaches.
  • Strong, demonstrated knowledge developing marketing strategies that convert to leads and achieve business goals.
  • Extensive and demonstrated editorial and story/content development experience, including proficiency in AP and Chicago style.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with global communications teams and developing messaging for global audiences from different backgrounds, including different sectors, geographies, and interest areas.
