Position Overview

Provides professional geologic and related technical expertise to IDEM, other governmental agencies and the public. The position primarily contributes to the objectives of properly characterizing and remediating uncontrolled waste and spill sites by performing or evaluating advanced geologic, environmental geologic, engineering geologic and hydrogeologic work so that human health and the environment are protected and contaminated properties can again be economically viable.

Responsibilities

  • Understands applicable regulatory rules, guidance, and policies.

  • Comprehends oral and written information and clearly and effectively expresses self to present details.
  • Able to prioritize assignments to ensure expectations are met within the specified time frames.
  • Understands importance of achieving results and makes effort to achieve agreed upon goals/objectives.
  • Evaluates work plans and site investigations to determine adequacy of site characterization.
  • Evaluates preferential pathways, contaminant fate-and-transport models, and exposure scenarios.
  • Evaluates temporal plume dynamics and statistical plume stability demonstrations.
  • Evaluates geological aspects and efficacy of remedial actions.
  • Evaluates adequacy and efficacy of institutional and/or engineering control measures.
  • Reviews final closure stage(s) to ensure compliance with applicable rules, guidance, and non-rule policy.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • The applicant needs a minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Geology. Licensed Professional Geologists (LPGs) are preferred.

Difficulty of Work:

  • The position makes decisions and recommendations regarding geology-related information.
  • Decisions may be technical and highly complex.

Personal Work Relationships:

  • Must be able to interact and work cooperatively with others.

Physical Effort:

  • Minimal physical effort beyond walking around the office.
  • May rarely perform field investigation and/or oversight requiring some light lifting.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office setting with infrequent site visits and field work.
