~ At the McDowell Environmental Center, our curriculum is more than a walk in the woods although it may start there. ~

We believe experiential classes help students to better understand the natural world, leading them to a sense of responsibility for it. Focused on basic ecological concepts, the curriculum is hands-on and our classroom is the great outdoors, giving students the greatest opportunity to learn about themselves and their environment.
Topics covered can include:

  • Forest Communities
  • Map & Compass
  • Water Ecology
  • Earth Science
  • Group Dynamics
  • Canoeing

Position Overview

Share our 1,140 acres of forests, streams, waterfalls and canyons in northwest Alabama with groups of students from all over the South. Work with the students to foster a sense of community as well as an appreciation, understanding and responsibility for the environment. The students, mostly grades 4 - 8, come from a variety of backgrounds and visit our Center for two, three or four day programs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach engaging, hands-on classes in the great outdoors, i.e., forest ecology, map & compass skills, earth science, aquatic ecology, Native American history, canoeing, team building and high ropes.
  • Adapt the established lesson plans to match your teaching style and strengths.
  • Assist with program development.
  • Lead recreation and evening programs such as fishing, field games, arts & crafts, campfire songs, astronomy, and live animal programs.

Qualifications

  • In order to succeed in this position, you must have a demonstrated respect and affinity for children and a desire to help them learn and grow in an outdoor environment.
  • The following characteristics are essential: enthusiasm, maturity, initiative, sense of humor, flexibility and team spirit.
  • Instructors need to be familiar with the outdoors and environmental issues, have a Bachelor's degree (or higher) and possess current certifications in CPR and First Aid (Wilderness First Aid/First Responder is preferred). All employees will undergo a background check once hired.
  • Fall season positions run late-August to mid-December.

Compensation includes: $290 per week + room and board. Extra perks include: Single occupancy rooms, with shared kitchen, living room, laundry room and screened porches.
