Position Overview

The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works has an immediate opening for the position of Energy and Water Coordinator.

The County is seeking an innovative and experienced individual who is committed to work as part of a team in delivering a broad range of energy-related projects at County facilities. The position covers a wide range of duties, such as energy monitoring and reporting to researching and implementing programs/projects in the County's EnergyWise Plan. Click here to see the EnergyWise Plan.  

Responsibilities  

  • Coordinates with County departments on planning, budgeting, and implementation of various energy management projects.
  • Communicates with County departments on their energy and water consumption and identification of saving measures.
  • Manages programs and projects for energy efficiency, generation and storage for facilities county-wide.
  • Selects, implements and provides ongoing management of a new utility software management system for county facilities.
  • Monitors facilities' utility usage (electricity, gas, water/sewer, and solar).
  • Negotiates, manages and enforces contractual work of consultants.
  • Prepares engineering studies and reports.
  • Develops, monitors and forecasts the utility budget.
  • Conducts energy audits and makes recommendations related to energy efficiency projects.
  • Analyzes utility rates for optimization.
  • Promotes behavioral changes within the organization that enhances innovation and a commitment to energy conservation.

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of applicable legislation and standards, an energy management background and the ability to: 

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a broad group of stakeholders.
  • Problem solve to meet the goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Work independently or in a team setting.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with representatives of other departments or agencies and utility companies' representatives.
  • Use latest technologies to collect data and make decisions. 

Minimum requirements for this position: 

  • Graduation from an accredited college with an Bachelor degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Business or other closely related field.
  • AND: Three (3) years of recent (within the last 5 years) experience in the utility field.
  • Experience with an emphasis on energy procurement, energy conservation or utility deregulation is highly desirable.
  • A Masters degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Business or other closely related field may substitute for one year of the required experience. 

Compensation: Salary is $72,779.20 - $88,483.20.
