~ Founded in 1991, the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is a US not-for-profit organization that builds the capacity of local leaders and organizations to address important global issues including climate change, sustainable development, and environmental protection, resulting in embedded capacity and lasting change. Headquartered in the USA, ISC currently operates in the United States, China, Bangladesh and India. ISC has an international staff cohort of approximately 55 people. ~

ISC has been operating in India since 2012, leading improvements in urban sustainability and in sustainable manufacturing through capacity building in partnership with corporations, governments, educational institutions and civil society. ISC is currently implementing programs funded by USAID, Mahindra and Mahindra, the Rockefeller Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation. ISC has offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and partners with Symbiosis Institute of International Business (SIIB) to operate the EHS+ Center in Pune.

Position Overview

The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) seeks an experienced industrial energy management expert to implement and manage a targeted initiative designed to drive energy efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in India’s small and medium enterprise (SME) manufacturing sector.

The Director - Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy will lead the strategic vision for advancing ISC India in the sphere of clean energy and energy efficiency. This position will also lead the million dollar SME Clean Technology program. The Director will work closely with Indian industrial energy efficiency service providers, small and medium-sized factories, lenders and policymakers to provide assessment, training, technical assistance and best practice recommendations to support clean technology solutions that reduce GHG emissions and increase energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector.

The Director will develop and expand relationships with National, State and local leaders (Ministry officials, business leaders, and educational institutions) and work closely with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to monitor progress towards defined, sustainable and lasting carbon and energy reduction supported by sustainable manufacturing solutions.

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Lead strategy development for ISC India’s energy programs.
  • Actively develop ideas for future actions in this field.
  • Advise the Country Director on important opportunities, trends and developments in the energy sector in India.
  • Represent the SME Clean Technology program and other energy programs to government officials, funding sources, partners, beneficiaries, and private industry at conferences and other outreach opportunities.

Program Implementation and Oversight:

  • Lead implementation of the SME Clean Technology program. Provide direction and oversight on design and delivery of other energy programs.
  • Provide technical support to ISC’s energy programs in India.
  • Lead strategic analysis of SME clusters including relevant metrics, growth projections, environmental impact statements, and financial viability of clean technology implementation statements.
  • Lead the selection of and coordination with five energy service providers, and participating SMEs.
  • Plan and conduct initial energy assessments in the participating SME factories.
  • Lead development of cluster-specific training curriculum to support the SME Clean Technology program in cooperation with SIIB, Pune. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate trainers for deployment to selected SMEs.
  • Evaluate energy efficiency policies and regulations applicable to SME target clusters. Establish relationships with key government and industry stakeholders.
  • Coordinate benchmarking at launch of project and the quarterly collection of relevant data from SMEs.
  • Develop work plans, budgets and progress reports as required by ISC, donors and other partners.
  • Work with ISC’s M&E staff to develop tools to capture qualitative and quantitative changes in energy efficiency rates and GHG reductions.

Communication:

  • Communicate program activities, challenges and accomplishments to ISC’s India Country Director and relevant ISC staff.
  • Review and finalize program reports, ensuring that they meet ISC’s standards.

Financial Management:

  • Provide proactive oversight of financial activities, assuring program activities are implemented according to the financial forecast and expected spending rate.
  • Develop and monitor detailed budget activity to plan for and track spending as well as support reporting.
  • Work with relevant staff to revise the budget periodically.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, business administration, industrial planning, environmental management, or other related degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • 10 - 12 years of work experience in the field of energy efficiency and clean energy in India, including collaboration with relevant agencies (e.g. BEE) and management of factory-level engagements.
  • Knowledge of SMEs, financial and educational institutions, NGOs, and governmental agencies at the local, State and National levels working in industrial regulation and policy.
  • Strong working experience in training needs assessment, curriculum development, capacity development delivery, and monitoring and evaluation.
  • A professional history that demonstrates energy and creativity, and the ability to successfully deliver training and workshops.
  • Strong supervisory and mentoring skills.
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and communications skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work proactively and independently, and collaborate as necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments appropriately and manage the pressure of conflicting demands.
  • Ability to travel within India and internationally.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Hindi.
  • Commitment to the ISC mission and goals.
