Position Overview

The Cornucopia Institute is seeking a full-time employee to join our team.  The Development Manager will oversee the organization’s revenue development and member stewardship efforts

A heartfelt passion for protecting the environment, the good food movement, human health, humane livestock husbandry, and social/economic justice for family farmers is essential.

The Development Manager will work in concert with other key staff to lead organizational fundraising efforts and will report to Cornucopia’s current development director who is assuming a new leadership role in the organization. The Development Manager will build on a successful fundraising program by stewarding existing members and identifying and cultivating prosperous new relationships.

Job Summary:

The Development Manager will be primarily responsible for the annual fundraising plan, including designing and implementing campaigns and appeals using email, direct-mail, social media, and occasional events. The Development Manager will create and execute the annual development calendar and craft campaign communications that are consistent with the organization’s messaging goals. The Development Manager reports to the Director of Operations.

This position will work closely with two part-time staff members who coordinate membership relations and manage the member database, as well as a full-time Development and Communications Associate who assists with foundation relations and grant writing and reporting. The Development Manager will also work closely with the contracted social media coordinator and graphic designer.

Worksite and Hours:

This is a full-time telecommuting position. Typical work hours are 9AM-5PM Monday through Friday, with very occasional weekend work and infrequent travel required. Applicants should have a dedicated workspace in their residence.

The Cornucopia Institute is formally based in Cornucopia, Wisconsin, but is virtually officed. Staff telecommute from home offices around the country. Because of this, applicants must be highly motivated and able to work independently.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor an annual fundraising plan, including existing member stewardship and retention, quarterly appeals, end-of-year campaign, and new member acquisition.
  • Create a major gift program, including stewardship of existing major donors and cultivation plan for prospects.
  • Develop and implement strategic processes for welcoming new members, securing monthly recurring gifts, encouraging planned giving, and promoting matching gifts.
  • Manage the creation of solicitation and stewardship materials, such as infographics, impact reports, testimonials, and project-related collateral.
  • Design and implement crowd-funding campaigns, working with the social media coordinator and graphic designer. Integrate existing social media platforms into the fundraising program and introduce novel platforms to enhance outreach and attract new members.
  • Maintain web presence on development-related external sites such as Guidestar, 1% for the Planet, etc.
  • Plan occasional small-scale member events and major donor meetings.
  • Track success of campaigns and provide quarterly fundraising reports. Support foundation prospecting, grant writing, reporting, and foundation relations.
  • Support other development or communications tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Proven entrepreneurial self-starter with ability to produce high-quality materials autonomously;
  • At least two years of professional experience in nonprofit development;
  • Understanding of full range of development office activities;
  • Interest, ease, and comfort with social media platforms and crowdfunding basics;
  • Strong and versatile writer with solid foundation in fundraising composition;
  • Demonstrated ability to co-create fundraising campaigns and craft successful appeals;
  • Demonstrated ability, or interest in, co-creating professionally designed materials;
  • Excellent relationship building and interpersonal communications skills;
  • Understanding of major gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities;
  • Comfort with technology and data analysis, including fundraising report creation;
  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent relevant work experience in the non-profit sector; and
  • A heartfelt passion for protecting the environment, the good food movement, human health, animal welfare, and economic justice for family-scale farms.

Desired:

  • Experience with successful non-profit crowdfunding;
  • Project management experience, including design, delivery, and evaluation;
  • Ability to competently converse with a wide variety of stakeholders in the good food movement on current issues;
  • CRM skills, particularly Salesforce, eTapestry and/or Rasier’s Edge; and
  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and interest in expanding these skills.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience.
