The Trustees of Reservations is at a defining moment in its history. Over the past few years under the leadership of its President, Barbara Erickson, it has grown annual revenues from $24 million to $30 million and is closing a successful $26.4 million capital campaign to support, protect and enhance cultural resources in Massachusetts. Now, as part of its strategic plan it is looking to fully leverage its properties around the state as part of an overall strategy to engage more people, diversify revenues, build support and increase public awareness.

Position Overview

As part of this strategy the organization is investing in a number of new positions that will help transform and enhance the way the organization relates and engages with its supporters, raises funds and attracts a whole new generation of donors who embrace the organization, not just for its mission but because it represents a fundamental aspect of their daily lives.

Reporting to senior development staff, the Trustees are seeking new Development Associates, who recent graduates from our top colleges and are looking to build careers in philanthropy or the non-profit sector.

They should be excited to be mentored and trained in the highest standards of traditional fundraising and one of America’s oldest land conservation organizations. At the same time, Development Associates will be encouraged to become externally focused, getting to meet new prospects, updating them on the work of The Trustees, thanking them for their support and encouraging and even soliciting individuals in terms of annual giving, program support gifts, and events.

Note: This position includes up to 25% travel,

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Build and leverage base of support from new individual donors for the Trustees in order to achieve annual goals
  • Increase annual fund gifts and size of 1891Society membership ( $1,000 pa)
  • Identify new major gift prospects
  • Achieve and maintain highest standards of relationship management and reporting
  • Thank and acknowledge supporters at events and programs
  • Collaborate with GMs and others to strengthen existing relationships at property level
  • Work with Development Department to support wide range of events and activities
  • Prospect research a portfolio of 150 names
  • Strong writing, public speaking, creative event planning and strategic thinking essential.
  • Execute and create meaningful points of engagement for our donors
  • Warm, friendly, engaging yet highly professional personality a must
  • Socially comfortable, a good speaker with an appetite to learn and develop new career opportunity
  • Highly motivated self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and management experience with multiple reports within development department

Qualifications

  • The position requires out going, energetic, and highly motivated early career professionals with a strong interest in fundraising and a belief in the importance of our mission.
  • This position requires superior communication and social skills, as well as the desire to be part of a team-oriented environment.
  • Successful candidates will have completed college at a tier 1 school and maybe have 1-2 years of professional work experience, but have not yet found what they want to do in the world.
  • The Development Associates help to meet a department annual revenue target of over $15 million and will have individual targets to achieve in terms of gifts, giving society joins and renewals and prospect identification, working from a portfolio of approximately 150 names of new prospects.
  • This position will work closely with the other members of the Major Gifts and Annual Fund team at the Trustees as well as the Chief of Development and Enterprise, Program Heads, and General Managers.
  • The Development Associate will possess a strong appreciation for the work of The Trustees, as well as an entrepreneurial spirit that will be applied to discovering new leadership prospects while engaging current donors and increasing their philanthropic support of The Trustees.
  • This is a full-time exempt position based in Boston, Massachusetts. Travel (reimbursed) using a personal vehicle is required in carrying out the essential duties and responsibilities.
