Position Overview

The Deputy Program Director plays a key leadership role in the program department of Greenpeace US (GPUS). In conjunction with the Program Director, the Deputy is responsible for overseeing the implementation of key campaign projects. This includes ensuring appropriate distribution of resources, overseeing scheduling of output, coordinating response to work to events in the external world and ensuring ongoing evaluation of our impact.

They will ensure that our campaign projects help to deliver systemic change in the world, provide multiple opportunities for people to engage and deliver on organizational goals such as fundraising and underscoring our commitment to justice. The Deputy will also work alongside the Program Director and the leadership team on all aspects of the department operations. They should be a highly skilled, passionate and innovative leader with extensive management experience in a dynamic and fast-paced setting.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of the program leadership team ensuring that our work both broadens and deepens our supporter base and delivers systemic change in the world to protect the environment
  • Oversee the development of major campaign project pushes, ensuring that they have clear, measurable objectives, are properly resourced and deliver on organizational goals, including ensuring they reflect the organization’s commitment to racial and social justice
  • Supervise project leaders ensuring consistency in our project management approach during development and delivery
  • Oversee a response team with a mission to critical eye towards identifying  external opportunities that don’t fit within agreed campaign plans
  • Work with Program Engagement Director to test messaging and engagement opportunities with our audiences
  • In collaboration with the Program Director and Program Operations Manager, develop and maintain departmental systems and ensure staff understanding of them. These systems include budget development and management, job competencies and expected behaviors, training programs and decision-making at all levels
  • Oversee the development and implementation of effective evaluation and reporting mechanisms for project pushes, including both programmatic and fundraising goals
  • Help the Program Director to foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the staff of the program department so everyone participates in recruiting and retaining supporters, building our power and resources
  • In concert with the Program Director and the program leadership team serve as a liaison to program and campaign leaders across Greenpeace’s 27 national and regional offices
  • Provide leadership and overall strategic direction to the GPUS program
  • Mentor and develop leaders on the team, at all levels

Qualifications

  • At least  7 years experience managing staff in  a fast paced and ambitious and work setting
  • At least 5-7 years developing and delivering long-term campaign strategies that deliver high impact
  • Keen awareness of the progressive and environmental landscape and ability to identify new opportunities and potential challenges to our work
  • Strong budgeting, analytical, and organizational skills with keen attention to detail
  • Experience directing large, national or international projects across multiple locations
  • Adept at leading highly-skilled, diverse and remote teams
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams, set and review goals, and assess risks and outcomes
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in cross-cultural settings and global experiences
  • Deep commitment to the organization's values on racial and social justice.

  • Deep confidence that change is possible and recognition that building people power is key to making change
