Description

~ We’re the Whidbey Camano Land Trust, an independent, nationally accredited, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It’s easy to fall in love with Whidbey and Camano Islands. These islands are truly magical with spectacular vistas and landscapes, including farms, wetlands, forests, prairies and marine shorelines, all providing places for people to enjoy the out-of-doors as well as refuge for wildlife. ~

Who we are is very simple – we’re the people who’ve been protecting the best of Whidbey and Camano Islands since 1984. During this time, we have partnered with landowners and our island communities to permanently protect 90 properties totaling over 8,700 acres on Whidbey and Camano Islands. We’ve helped expand state parks, county open spaces and protected working farms and forests, shorelines and lakes, and many natural habitats.

Position Overview

The Whidbey Camano Land Trust is seeking an articulate and motivated individual for the full-time position of Communications and Outreach Specialist (“Communications Specialist”). Working collaboratively with others, the Communication Specialist will implement the Land Trust’s communications and outreach plan using a combination of print and web communications, social media and public relations, and community and supporter events.

These activities will ensure widespread positive visibility in the region and inspire and promote a community conservation ethic in Island County — generating the donor-funded support necessary to realize our mission and help connect people to the land.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position that reports to the Community Engagement Director. The Land Trust offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The office is located at Greenbank Farm on Whidbey Island and is smoke-free, fragrance-free, and dog-friendly.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary writer of content and create the layout for materials, including newsletters, brochures, annual report, displays, e-news, press releases, and event-related literature.
  • Coordinate and/or facilitate tours and events designed to connect people to the land and deepen their engagement with the Land Trust.
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate public relations and social media.
  • Assist in maintaining the Land Trust’s website and coordinate web-based outreach, providing updates, engaging content, and news items.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or minor in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related fields and at least 2 to 4 years of experience in these fields or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Outgoing and friendly personality.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and cultivate positive and effective relationships with a wide variety and diversity of people and organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Demonstrated strong written, verbal and listening communication skills and the ability to make stories interesting and memorable.
  • Must be able to be flexible, work under tight deadlines, manage conflicting demands, and operate in an ever-changing work environment while maintaining sense of humor and perspective.
  • Must be available to work occasional weekends and evenings.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Passion for the mission of the Land Trust.
  • Creative, proactive, strategic, and entrepreneurial.
  • Experience coordinating and overseeing events.
  • Professional knowledge of the principles and techniques used in public relations, marketing, and community outreach.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of website maintenance and social media applications.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Knowledge of Island County and its local communities.
