Position Overview

The Business Manager (“Manager”) will be responsible for maintaining and optimizing an existing portfolio of customers and clients that support our energy from waste infrastructure in the Montgomery or Alexandria location.

The Manager will be responsible for customer waste supply contracts and will work with an established Covanta team on other public and private sector waste management related opportunities in the area for the primary purpose of maximizing company profitability and strategic growth opportunities.

The Manager will be involved in negotiating and managing contracts so an effective understanding of negotiations, contracts and contract law is an important functional requirement. A strong understanding of the economic drivers surrounding the waste industry within the private and public sector, along with the movement of waste within the market, is desirable.

The Manager will interact with local facility management teams and other senior managers to determine annual waste needs, contractual obligations, and financial projections for the individual plant(s) and market area regarding waste and other contractually related activities and services.

The Manager also will have certain responsibilities and obligations for the strategic long term planning for Covanta’s business within the respective region. The Manager is expected to interact with other company counterparts and departments on asset enhancement activities around existing/potential projects. The position also involves significant communication and presentations internally and externally, and has a significant amount of government relations activity given the municipal customer base.

The Manager will not have any direct reports but will be a significant resource and liaison with others in Covanta and with the customer base.

Qualifications

Position Requirements

  • College or equivalent education specializing in Business or in a complementary Engineering or Environmental Science field that has business
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills required. Solid financial skills and usage of Excel spreadsheets required
  • Person needs to be creative, entrepreneurial and have a  strong sense of ownership, initiative, and responsibility
  • Understanding and experience garnered in waste industry is highly desirable, but is not necessarily mandatory if the individual is highly skilled with sufficient management background in complex operating and business environment
  • Ability to travel locally
