~  Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) works on a full range of environmental issues to protect the South’s natural resources and the health and well-being of its people. Although our regional focus is the Southeast, much of our work is national in scope and impact. ~

With nine offices across the region (Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Asheville, NC; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Birmingham, AL; and Nashville, TN), SELC is widely recognized as the Southeast’s foremost environmental organization and regional leader. 

SELC works collaboratively with over 100 national, state, and local groups to enhance their efficacy and achieve our common conservation goals. Our legal and policy staff comprises some of the nation’s leading experts in their respective fields, and over its 32-year history SELC has earned a reputation as one of the most effective environmental organizations in the country. Position Overview

The Southern Environmental Law Center is accepting applications for an associate or staff attorney position in its office in Charleston, South Carolina.

Start date is as soon as possible. We welcome applications from 2018 graduates, attorneys completing clerkships, or more experienced attorneys, and we will hire either an associate attorney or staff attorney based on the level of experience of the successful applicant. We also anticipate that there will be a significant opportunity for this attorney to work on energy issues within South Carolina.

  • This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an organization that is successfully addressing some of the most important and challenging environmental and public health issues in the Southeast and the nation.
  • Associates and staff attorneys gain valuable experience and knowledge working with more senior attorneys on litigation and legal advocacy in state and federal courts and before regulatory agencies.
  • The term for an associate position is two years with the option for a third year.

Qualifications 

  • A strong academic background and commitment to SELC’s mission are required.
  • Litigation experience or background in environmental and/or energy law preferred.

Compensation: Salary is $64,000 – 72,000 for the associate attorney and higher for a staff attorney position depending on experience and includes an excellent benefits package. Interested persons should apply now.
