Department/College Highlights:

The Plants, Soils, and Climate Department houses a multidisciplinary group of scientists and teachers devoted to understanding the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms important to management of agricultural and natural systems. Degrees offered by the department include Plant Science; Land, Plant, and Climate Systems; Climate Science; Residential Design and Construction, as well as an associate degree in Horticulture, and certificate programs in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Maintenance.

The Plants, Soils, and Climate Department is in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. The department is housed in a new building with modern teaching and laboratory facilities, nearby research and teaching greenhouses, and Agricultural Experiment Station farms. Many opportunities for collaborations exist within the department, college, and across campus, including the Ecology Center, Department of Natural Resources, and researchers in entomology and plant pathology housed in the Biology Department. Several USDA Laboratories (Poisonous Plants Laboratory, Forage and Range Research Laboratory, Bee Research Laboratory) located on campus also offer potential for collaborations.

Utah State University is Utah’s Land-grant public research university (founded 1888) and has an enrollment of more than 28,000 students system-wide. Approximately 16,000 undergraduate students are on the Logan campus and 8,500 at other campuses statewide. Graduate student numbers were greater than 3,200 in 2016. The university has been highly ranked among public universities for affordability and academic quality.

Position Overview

Utah State University’s Department of Plants, Soils and Climate is excited to offer a full-time nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in Weed Science at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants should have a PhD and a record of excellence in scholarly research.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop their own funded research program, publish in refereed journals, communicate results at professional meetings and participate in graduate and undergraduate student education and mentoring.

The position is defined as 65% research, 30% teaching and 5% service. Utah State University is Utah’s land-grant university located 90 miles north of Salt Lake City, positioned between the scenic Wasatch Mountains and the Bear River Range. Logan offers a range of outdoor activities within minutes of campus and is within an easy day-drive of seven national parks. This position is available August 1, 2017.

Responsibilities

  • The applicant selected for this position is expected to develop an externally funded, innovative, and nationally-recognized research program addressing critical agronomic and non-crop weed science issues in Utah and the Western US.
  • The incumbent will also interact with other weed scientists at state and national levels, faculty in the department of Plants, Soils and Climate, and other appropriate entities within USU during the process of building a successful research program.
  • The successful candidate is also expected to teach one undergraduate and one graduate course related to weed science.
  • The undergraduate course should address principles of weed ecology, biology, and management in agricultural and natural ecosystems.
  • The graduate course should be developed in accordance with the candidate’s field of expertise.
  • Recruitment, mentoring, and teaching of graduate students are also expected.

Qualifications

  • An earned Ph.D. in a field such as, but not limited to, weed science, plant science, agronomy, or ecology.
  • Ability to develop an externally-funded research program.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively within and outside the classroom to diverse audiences.
  • Potential for effective collaboration with diverse faculty and staff.
