Position Overview

The City of Boise is looking for someone who cares deeply about energy and water efficiency, renewable energy, smaller carbon footprint, waste reduction, and global citizenship. The successful candidate will develop and promote the City's long-term sustainability thinking resulting in positive economic, social and environmental impacts. A confident communicator and presenter is a must, expert at tailoring messages to an audience preferred.

Strong emphasis is placed on a strategic thinker, excellent at identifying trends and implementing change, able to build synergy within and between departments and serve as a community resource. The ability to create messages and strategies to engage stakeholders, engender trust, and maintain superior relations and meeting facilitation is paramount to success in this role.

Responsibilities

70%:

  • Oversees the development and execution of overall sustainability program planning, project identification and prioritization, facilitation of City staff and stakeholder involvement, and tracking of project execution and progress.
  • Provides technical expertise to City staff and outreach to community groups.
  • Recommends and implements approaches and metrics to ensure the sustainability program is progressing towards goals associated with the Lasting, Innovative and Vibrant (LIV) initiative.
  • Oversees execution of various sustainability projects and programs being implemented by city departments including budget preparation, consultant selection as appropriate, contract administration, development of marketing and public outreach efforts, and development and implementation of a long-term strategic plan for sustainability.

30%:

  • Supports the wastewater system process improvement program.
  • Supports department oversight for long range planning, budget preparation and administration, fee evaluation, hand-off to Engineering Division for preliminary design and final design, consultant selection and contract administration for the expansion and upgrade of the City's wastewater treatment, biosolids application site and pipeline collection system.
  • Provides support to the City's ongoing NPDES permitting process for the wastewater treatment facility to include development of regulatory strategies TMDLs, NPDES application and negotiation, and interactions with the regulatory agencies involved in the process.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in environmental or science field(s), engineering or related field.
  • Requires education and/or experience to attain the following:
  • 5 years of management and administration experience in the environmental field(s) working with broad sustainability concepts and projects, federal and state regulatory statutes governing municipal activities as it relates to sustainability, water quality and wastewater treatment technologies.
