~ Florida is divided into five water management districts to pre­serve and manage Florida's precious water resources. The St. Johns River Water Manage­ment District is responsible for managing ground­water and surface water resources in all or part of 18 counties in northeast and east?central Florida. ~

Count­ies entirely in the District are Brevard, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Indian River, Nassau, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia. Counties partially in the District are Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Lake, Marion, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola and Putnam.

District staff work from service centers in Palatka, Jacksonville, Maitland and Palm Bay.  

Position overview

This is professional work in aquatic and wetland science. Incumbent will assist other District scientists in collecting and analyzing ecological data to support environmental restoration projects and to meet other environmental goals of the agency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support monitoring water levels, submersed aquatic vegetation and restoration project progress related to Lake Apopka restoration. 
  • Work involves monitoring lake dredging projects, monitoring water levels in the lake and the marsh flow way, monitoring operational costs of the flow way and assessing effectiveness of hydrilla management activities involving grass carp.
  • Field work, data management and QA/QC, data analysis and report writing are all involved.
  • Serve as field lead for fish and snail biomonitoring in the Fellsmere Water Management Area and assist with fish sampling and the evaluation of peat mining in the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area (EMCA). Work involves field work, data management, and report writing.
  • QA/QC spatial data for various projects and coordinate with GIS section to migrate data to district databases.
  • Conduct data entry and QA/QC for fire databases of USJRB and Upper Ocklawaha Basin. Assist with monitoring willow control activities in the USJRB.
  • Perform field support for long-term wetland monitoring related to the Central Florida Water Supply Initiative.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, zoology, or a field directly related to natural resource management and two years professional experience in the environmental field.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, botany, zoology, or a field directly related to natural resource management can substitute for one year of the experience described above.
  • A doctorate from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, botany, zoology, or a field directly related to natural resource management can substitute for the experience described above.
  • Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year- for-year basis for the required college education.
  • A valid Florida Driver’s License, Class E, is required.
  • SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory-testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes. Any offer of employment for a mandatory-testing position will be contingent upon successfully passing a drug screening paid by SJRWMD. Compensation: Base salary - $42,494.40. Starting salary commensurate with selected candidate's competencies and qualifications.
