~ The Marine Education Center and Aquarium is a unique facility on the Georgia coast. ~

The Center, part of Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, provides hands-on, feet in marine science and coastal ecology programs for student grades Pre K-college and the general public.

The Center is located on UGA’s 700-acre Skidaway Marine Science Campus with Marine Extension’s Shellfish Research Laboratory and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. NOAA’s Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary and Georgia Southern University Applied Coastal Research Laboratory operate facilities on campus as well.

Position Overview

Georgia Sea Grant is seeking four Marine Education interns to work at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island. Marine education internships are offered to recent college graduates with a B.S. or B.A in Biology and coursework in marine science. The position serves as a bridge experience between college and professional positions and is designed for individuals who would like to gain teaching experience in environmental education.

  • The position requires training for two months with senior staff in a variety of marine science topics before teaching field, lab and discussion classes to Pre-K to 12 grade students.
  • Additional responsibilities include animal husbandry, UGA Aquarium exhibit maintenance and visitor services. Interns live on site in UGA housing.
  • Four interns will be selected for the period of September 2017 to August 2018.

  • A one page cover letter (addressed to Intern selection Committee, 12 point font, 1 inch margins) briefly describing your past interest as it relates to the internship qualifications and your future goals.

  • An official transcript of your college/university work, including courses in progress (if applicable). If your college or university is not in the U.S., an explanation of the grading system must be included. Any material not in English must include a translation.
  • 3 letters of recommendation from the individuals listed in your résumé. Letters should either be mailed directly to the Internship Selection Committee by these individuals or placed in a sealed envelope signed by the referring individual and mailed with your other application materials.  Emailed, faxed and late letters will not be accepted.
