~ The Las Vegas office of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) is administered by an office manager and comprised of branches of the following bureaus: Air Quality, Corrective Actions, Federal Facilities, Waste Management, Safe Drinking Water and Water Pollution Control. ~

The Las Vegas branches work under the same authority as the main bureaus in the Carson City office. The activities in the Las Vegas office have been tailored to meet division needs and the needs of the community in the southern part of the state, including Clark County. The Las Vegas office works cooperatively with the Clark County Health District to ensure protection of human health and the environment in southern Nevada.

Position Overview

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Corrective Actions has an immediate opening for an Environmental Scientist 3 in the Las Vegas, Nevada office. Interested individuals with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience conducting environmental characterization through remediation of Leaking Underground Storage Tank (UST) and other contaminated sites should apply through the State of Nevada Human Resources website following the link provided below.

This position will oversee assessment through remediation of a wide variety of contaminants through implementing the Leaking UST & Remediation Programs in the Las Vegas Valley and adjacent portions of Southern Nevada.

Responsibilities

  • Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology, and other environmental programs.
  • Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
  • This position will oversee assessment through remediation of a wide variety of contaminants through implementing the Leaking Underground Storage Tank (UST) & Remediation Programs in the Las Vegas Valley and adjacent portions of Southern Nevada.
  • The position is responsible for: technical review of assessment documents; review and approval of project cost proposals; review and approval of remediation plans; and providing technical guidance to program staff, the regulated community, and local governments.
  • Because this oversight work includes interfacing with the public concerning complex and sensitive issues, the position is responsible for problem solving, independent decision-making, hazard communication, risk communication, and technical report writing.
  • The position has responsibility for ensuring that site assessment and clean up of released hazardous substances are protective of soil and groundwater resources and are protective of human health.

Qualifications

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and 3 years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research, planning, and technical support; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Position Experience:

  • Experience planning, managing, and/or conducting environmental clean-up projects (Leaking UST and/or Remediation projects/cases) either within a governmental agency or consulting company is required.
  • Experience implementing risk-based decision making to prioritize remediation resources and evaluate cases for closure is required.
  • Experience managing complex, large-scale clean-up projects is required.
  • Microsoft Access and/or similar databases
  • The successful candidate will possess demonstrated skills, knowledge and abilities sufficient to apply State & Federal statutes, regulations, and policies pertaining to pollution control to achieve regulatory compliance by industry, government, and the public on diverse environmental projects in a manner designed to protect human health and the environment.

Compensation: The approximate annual salary ranges between $49,047.12 to $72,954.72. The salary offered to a successful applicant will be commensurate with the relevant work history and experience provided by the applicant.
