~ The Lakes and Ponds Management and Protection Program works to protect, maintain, enhance, and restore the health of Vermont lakes and the public uses that healthy lake ecosystems provide through outreach and education, monitoring and assessment, and regulatory programs. ~

While the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issues most of the state’s environmental permits, the Department does more than just set forth regulations and assure compliance. Through its programs, the DEC:

  • manages water and air quality
  • regulates solid and hazardous wastes
  • administers a number of voluntary pollution and waste reduction programs

Position Overview

The State of Vermont Lakes and Ponds Management and Protection Section is seeking two qualified candidates to work as limnological technicians from July 17 through August 25, 2017. The position will consist of five weeks of field work on Vermont’s inland lakes and one week of work in the office entering and processing data. Each week will consist of four ten-hour days.

This position, Environmental Technician II (Job Opening #621304), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental program administrative work for the Department of Environmental Conservation. Duties involve the gathering, processing, and management of technical data and records using computerized systems and related technologies. Work may be performed in a variety of regulatory, non-regulatory, scientific, and engineering programs. Work at this level differs from the higher level technicians in the level of independence and from lower level technicians in the level of expertise and breadth of knowledge required. Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level technician, analyst, scientist, engineer, or administrative supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Due to the unpredictability of field work, some days may be as long as twelve hours.
  • Technicians will assist in a variety of limnological sampling techniques both in the open water and in the near shore littoral zone. Sampling will be conducted as part of the USEPA third ever National Lake Assessment.
  • Sampling will be of thirteen lakes currently used as a climate change reference lake set in Vermont.
  • Sampling will be conducted from both canoes and motorboats. Technicians will need to be able to portage canoes, carry heavy backpacks, and work in all kinds of weather conditions.
  • Sampling will include the use of a Hydrolab, Kemmerer, sediment core sampler, Secchi disc, GPS, electronic field forms, and other limnological equipment.
  • In addition, nearshore littoral and terrestrial habitat observations will be made by crews.
  • Samples that will be collected include sediment diatoms, phosphorus, nitrogen, alkalinity, earth metals, chlorophyll a, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, temperature and littoral macroinvertebrates.
  • Preferred candidates will have an interest in pursuing a career in the aquatic sciences and some coursework to this effect.
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated a strong work ethic and willingness to work long hours in sometimes adverse conditions.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree AND one (1) year or more of experience in administration of a technical program.

OR

  • High School diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience in the administration of a technical program.

OR

  • One (1) year or more of experience as an Environmental Technician I.
