Position Overview
The Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation is seeking an Education Support Specialist I for Bear Creek Lake State Park. This is a wage position with no benefits and the employee is limited to working no more than 1500 hours in a 12 month period from May 1 to April 30.
Responsibilities
- Plans and presents a variety of programs and activities focusing on the environmental, historic and cultural features of Bear Creek Lake State Park and the surrounding area to the general public.
- Programs will include campfires, nature crafts, natural history/environmental education, and outdoor recreation skills.
- Will inform park visitors of rules and regulations for the purpose of protecting and preserving Park natural areas.
- Training in outdoor skills and in interpretive education methodology will be provided.
Qualifications
- Successful candidates should possess knowledge of ecological concepts and familiarity with outdoor recreation skills.
- Prior experience or education in biology, environmental sciences, education, history, parks and recreation, or wildlife studies preferred.
- Have basic knowledge of Virginia’s flora and fauna, and the ability to plan, organize and conduct tours and programs featuring them.
- Familiarity with archery or paddling techniques helpful.
- Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License or must be able to obtain one.
- Familiarity with accepted American Red Cross First Aid procedures desirable.
- Must possess strong personal communication skills.
- Must be friendly and outgoing.
- Able to work unsupervised and with a team.
- Should be willing to research additional topics in order to lead successful programs.
- Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Able to accurately maintain reports related to programs.
- Proficient with Microsoft operating systems.
- Be willing to work weekdays, weekends, evenings and holidays up to 40 hours per week.
Compensation: $10.05 - $17.14/hr
