~ Scenic America is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to preserving and enhancing the scenic character of America's communities and countryside. ~

Scenic America has been an advocacy and education organization for over 35 years. Through national advocacy efforts and technical assistance services, local and national projects, and the support of its state affiliates, Scenic America fights to reduce billboard blight and visual pollution; preserve the scenic character of the nation's highways and byways; promote context-sensitive highway solutions; ensure the mitigation of the visual impact of overhead wires and other intrusions in the landscape; and promote scenic easements and other strategies to protect open space and preserve irreplaceable scenic resources.

Position Overview

We are looking for an individual who is passionate, creative, and dynamic and who possesses the ability to lead and inspire others with a scenic vision through the thoughtful development of aesthetically-compelling transportation corridors and public spaces. Scenic America's President serves as the organization's chief executive officer, chief financial officer, and chief operating officer.

Scenic America's President is responsible for managing and leading the organization's policy, outreach, and advocacy efforts nationwide, acts as the primary fundraiser to ensure the fiscal and administrative health of the organization, and lays the groundwork for institutional growth and the continued success of the scenic conservation movement.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the implementation of the 2016-19 strategic plan intended to guide Scenic America's growth and success. Download the plan here.
  • Develops and guides the creation of policies and projects in fulfillment of the organization's mission.
  • Serves as Scenic America's principal representative with public audiences, partner organizations and funders.
  • Advocates for and supports the development and implementation of progressive and sound public policies related to the visual environment and serves as primary liaison with the Congressional Scenic Caucus.
  • Manages and has principal responsibility for fundraising and the prudent fiscal operation of the organization. Leads the organization's fundraising efforts including direct mail/email solicitations, identification and solicitation of foundations including grant-writing requests; and coordination of those efforts with staff and designated board members
  • Manages and develops relationships and partnerships with like-minded organizations and individuals, particularly at the national level.
  • Encourages others with a scenic vision to become leaders in their communities and form local Scenic chapters if one does not already exist.
  • Ensures that the organization fulfills its obligations under the law as a 501 (c) (3) organization.
  • Develops and oversees annual budgets and assures that the organization operates within budget.
  • Works with staff in the creation and distribution all publications, online communication vehicles, media advisories, the Scenic America website, and other materials designed to inform public audiences, public officials, and the media, and establish Scenic America as the preeminent source of information on scenic conservation issues.
  • Provides technical assistance and support to Scenic affiliates, allied organizations, and the public, providing them with the educational, technical and legal tools needed to affect policies impacting America's beauty.
  • Hires and manages the Scenic America staff in consultation with the Board.
  • Serves as principal staff liaison to the Board of Directors and its committees. Organizes Board of Directors meetings and conference calls as needed.

Qualifications

  • We are looking for an individual who has passion for the mission and is able to advocate and inspire others through oral and written communications including the research and writing of position papers, public speeches and appearances, educational seminars, press releases and editorials, and grant writing.
  • The President will be charged with growing the organization through the recruitment of new Board members, development of a sustainable funding formula including finding new funding sources, and recruiting and maintaining partnerships with allied organizations and public officials.
  • As stated in our strategic plan, Scenic America is "Taking the Long View" when it comes to our mission of creating a more beautiful country.
  • Three decades of experience has shown us that having long-term goals is necessary, and that in the short-term our mission is at times, quite challenging. Therefore we seek someone who is optimistic, independent, patient, resilient, and a self-starter who can motivate others and work with a high degree of self-direction.
  • Our ideal candidate will have one or more of the following: experience in advocacy in Congress and/or the Federal government; a background in developing and implementing policy; experience and existing positive relationships with like-minded organizations; and experience raising money from individual donors and foundations.
  • We prefer a candidate with an advanced degree in a relevant discipline (such as law, planning, business, engineering, etc.).

Compensation: Negotiable based upon experience and qualifications.
