Position Overview

Herrera seeks a mid-level Environmental Permitting Coordinator / Wetland Scientist (education, certification, and experience sought in both disciplines) with a strong work ethic for our Seattle office. 

Responsibilities

  • You will work closely with senior staff and project managers to provide support on projects involving environmentally critical areas analysis and reporting, mitigation planning and reporting, and environmental permitting (most often for public infrastructure projects).
  • You will also integrate wetland biology, riparian/stream ecology, and hydrology to assess habitat conditions, characterize environmental impacts, and participate in designing innovative restoration and mitigation solutions for wetlands and fish and wildlife habitat projects.
  • You will also perform biological studies (wetland assessment, monitoring, and delineations; habitat characterization; and shoreline assessment and surveys), and related research and field work.
  • The qualified individual will have strong field skills and research skills, strong knowledge of aquatic permitting requirements, perform a variety of analyses in the office, prepare reports and permit applications, and track permitting schedules to support projects throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Qualifications

Applicant must have:

  •  Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related science field and a minimum of 3 years of pertinent professional experience.
  • University of Washington Wetland Science and Management Certificate or other similar credentials.
  • Wetland Professional in Training or Professional Wetland Scientist certification through the Society of Wetland Scientists.
  • Ability to drive vehicles on a variety of road surfaces and navigate by foot over rough terrain.
  • Ability to perform field work in a variety of terrain and weather conditions, and carrying required equipment.

Additional qualifications sought:

  •  Experience in related fields such as wildlife or water quality is a plus.
  • Experience with SEPA and NEPA processes and documentation is a plus.
  • Experience with Endangered Species Act consultations is a plus.
  • Experience preparing planting plans, specifications, and cost estimates is a plus.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or GIS software is a plus.
  • Experience installing field monitoring equipment is a plus.
  • Other specific trainings (e.g., wetland and stream delineation, wetland rating, and calculating credits and debits for compensatory mitigation) and professional organization affiliations should be noted in the applicant’s résumé and/or cover letter.
  • The position requires excellent writing skills, project management experience (including scoping and budgeting), ability to work well within project teams and autonomously, technical proficiency in current protocols (wetland delineations, ESA-listed species habitat assessments), and a solid understanding of municipal critical areas and shoreline codes, state and federal regulations, and associated reporting/permitting requirements for projects affecting wetlands, streams, and shorelines.
  • Periodic travel to project sites throughout the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere in the western U.S. may be required.
