Position Overview

The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Iowa State University seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position in forestry/silviculture at the assistant professor level. The position is a 9-month appointment and has responsibilities in teaching, research, and service (a standard appointment is 45%, 45%, and 10%, respectively).

The NREM Department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is dedicated to the Land Grant missions of teaching, research, and Extension. The department is broad in scope, with >500 undergraduate students in 2 majors, Animal Ecology and Forestry, and graduate majors in Fisheries Biology, Forestry, and Wildlife Ecology. Faculty also contribute to several interdepartmental graduate programs including Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Environmental Science, Genetics and Genomics, Immunobiology, Microbiology, and Sustainable Agriculture. The department houses the U.S. Geological Survey’s Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

Responsibilities

  • The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching courses that contribute to departmental academic priorities, including silviculture, assisting in dendrology, and other courses in the undergraduate natural resources curricula.
  • Teaching also includes developing a graduate course in the candidate’s area of expertise.
  • Mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students and participation in a 3-week fall camp.
  • Additionally, the individual will develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in silviculture and management of Midwestern forests.
  • Collaborations with private industry, commodity organizations, county conservation boards, non-governmental organizations, and Iowa Department of Natural Resource staff are encouraged.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Applicants must have an earned PhD by start date in forestry, or a closely related forestry field and research experience related to siliviculture and/or forest management.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Publication record.
  • Post-doctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment.
  • Grant writing experience and the ability to obtain external funding support for research activities.
  • Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching in forestry/silviculture courses.
